History of Valdesil and origins of the vineyard
Bodegas Valdesil is a historic producer from Vilamartín de Valdeorras in Galicia. The winery dates back to the early 20th century, when José Ramón Gayoso pioneered the planting of Godello on the steep slopes of Portela. His sons continue this work by expanding the original massive selection of the Pedrouzos vineyard to eleven unique plots: the "pezas." This Pezas da Portela pays tribute to these original plantings, and the wine is vinified exclusively from these historic plots each year.
Valdeorras: climate, location and soils
The Valdeorras region is located in inland Galicia, on the banks of the Sil River. The climate is continental with Atlantic influences, with warm summers, cold winters, and large temperature variations between day and night. These conditions promote the development of aromas and acidity in the grapes. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 450 to 650 meters and are planted on poor, colluvial soils, formed by the weathering of iron-rich slate and schist. This soil type produces wines with minerality, tension, and depth.
Grape variety and harvest
Pezas da Portela is made from 100% Godello grapes, sourced from a massive selection in the original Pedrouzos vineyard. The vines are 60 to 90 years old and are pruned short to bush vines (low to the ground) for maximum sap concentration. Harvesting is done by hand, with selection in the vineyard. Thanks to the altitude of the vineyards and the poor terroir, this produces grapes with plenty of energy and tension.
Fermentation and maturation
Fermentation takes place with wild yeasts in old French oak barrels from the Allier and Vosges forests. The use of neutral wood preserves the Godello's aromatic purity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for six months on its fine lees in the same oak barrels, followed by another twelve months of aging in stainless steel tanks. This combination gives the wine structure, texture, and aging potential, without losing any freshness.
Color, odor and flavor profile
In the glass, this wine displays a bright golden yellow color with a green tinge. The nose opens refined and layered, with aromas of ripe citrus, quince, white flowers, almond, and a hint of wet stone. After swirling, notes of dried herbs and a subtle toasted note from aging develop. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined. An impressive balance of ripe fruit, vibrant acidity (6.24 g/L), a tight, dry structure (2.0 g/L residual sugar), and a striking minerality. The wine has a fine balance between ripe fruit, creamy texture, and saline tension. The finish is long, clean, and slightly saline, with a hint of lime zest and white pepper. This is a white wine with a Burgundian style, but with a Galician soul.

The barrel-fermented Godello 2018 Pezas Da Portela has a more golden color and a creamy nose, spicy and somehow flinty, not oaky. It fermented and matured with lees and bâtonnage in French barriques for six months. The palate reveals complex flavors; it's nuanced with a mixture of mineral and gunpowder-like notes with notions of tangerine peel, quince paste and dried flowers, with yellow rather than white fruit. This comes from a myriad of small plots in the village of Portela, where the family Prada Gayoso originated. Serious, seamless and expressive Godello. 8,000 bottles produced. It rested in tank for one year before it was bottled in February 2020.
I had not tasted the wines from Valdesil for a while, as they seemed to have vanished into thin air. Unfortunately, the coronavirus lockdown has slowed things down, and many of the wines have not yet been bottled, including the top single-vineyard wines. But I tasted a noteworthy new wine in its second vintage, Asadoira. They have 25 hectares of vineyards and produce 180,000 bottles per year.

Pale, green-tinged yellow. Fresh pear, white peach and orange zest on the nose, with honeysuckle and mineral notes adding lift. Bright and sharply focused in the mouth, offering incisive citrus and orchard fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of fennel and quinine. Smoothly melds power and vivacity and finishes very long and nervy, showing outstanding clarity and minerally persistence.

Gold was once mined in the Galician region of Valdeorras, the 'golden' valley, but today it is wine. In particular white wine from a special grape, godello and red wine from the grape Mencia. The variety grows on slopes and on plateaus around the river Sil and has been successfully transformed into fine wines. The Valdesil family domain is one of the most prominent houses that sources its grapes from all kinds of small plots, partly granite-containing, partly sandy, partly with slate. The sticks are often very old (top). Val De Sil has made the Godello and Mencia wines from the Valley de Sil famous.
Bodegas Valdesil is located in Vilamartín de Valdeorras in the deep west of Spain, approximately 180 km southeast of Santiago de Compostela. The history of the winery begins in the year 1885, when the winegrower José Ramón Gayoso began planting godello grape vines on the slate slopes of the Sil valley. Everyone made fun of him at the time. Although Gayoso later gave up the vineyard, the plants survived, and today the same genetic material is still used here. The modern history of the winery starts in 1991. In that year the Prada-Gayoso family brings the vineyards back in top condition. Today the winery covers 20 ha. Of these, many are small plots of old godello plants. Some vineyards are located at the best spots of Valdeorras, especially on the sunny slopes at Córgomo and Portel. The red grape variety mencía is also grown here. A total of six wines are made from both grape varieties. Bodegas Valdesil is one of the most reliable producers in Galicia, "a very reliable source for quality wines from Valdeorras", says Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
