background and vision of El Castro de Valtuille

El Castro de Valtuille is part of Bodegas Castro Ventosa, a family estate in Bierzo that has been in the Pérez family for centuries. When Raúl Pérez became involved, he brought new energy and techniques, but the core of quality winemaking remained. The estate strives to create wines that express the Bierzo terroir: mineral soils, cooler nights, and elegant acidity. Each cuvée reflects this vision, with a balance of power and freshness.

origin and grape – Bierzo and Mencía

This project is located in the DO Bierzo, in the northwest of the province of León, Castilla y León. The climate has both Atlantic and continental influences: warm days and cool nights. The soil is often stony with interwoven clay and minerality. The grape used is 100% Mencía, Bierzo's native variety. Under the right conditions, this grape produces wines with delicate fruit, tension, and beautiful texture.

vinification and maturation of the 2024 vintage

Combine the fruity drive of Pinot Noir with the invigorating freshness of Syrah, and you have a fine Mencía. This "young" wine from Raul Perez is crafted with the same care as the other cuvées, but the grapes are sourced from younger vineyards. To preserve its optimal primary (grape) aromas, the wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. A beautiful Burgundian red in the glass, with a nose dominated by red and black fruit. A light hint of terroir and impressively large for its price point. A continental flavor style with abundant ripe red fruit, meatiness, yet noble freshness. Well-structured and long.

tasting note 2024 el castro de valtuille joven

The color is bright ruby red with purple hues. The nose reveals aromas of black fruit such as cassis, blackberries, and blueberries, along with a hint of black olive and a light animal note. On the palate, the texture is supple and elegant, with finesse and balance. The acidity is fresh, the tannins finely structured, and the finish is mineral and clean. Parker estimates this vintage scores around 92 points.

serving advice and storage potential

Serve this wine chilled at 14-16°C (57-61°F) in a large glass to allow the aromas to develop. Because it's relatively young, it immediately reveals itself as supple, but it can age further until 2029. The combination of glass, temperature, and time will further develop its texture and refinement.

culinary partnerships

  • Grilled chicken with thyme and lemon — the wine's fresh profile enhances the herbs and white meat.
  • Tuna tataki with sesame sauce — the elegance of the wine complements the delicately stewed fish beautifully.
  • Tapas with chorizo and olives — the fruit and spiciness of the wine provide a counterbalance.
  • Queso manchego with fig compote — the saltiness and sweetness form a harmonious balance.
  • Mushroom and sage risotto — the earthy notes of the mushrooms accentuate the mineral core.
  • Wild boar ragout — the powerful structure of the wine matches the robust character of the dish.

Raúl Pérez is without a doubt the most mediatic winemaker in all of Spain today. However, his wines are almost impossible to find! Everyone talks about it, but few have already tasted them. Raúl is present in numerous appellations and regions, not only in Spain, but also in South Africa, Portugal, South America.

We have been following Raúl since 2000; at that time he was still working as an oenologist at the Castro Ventosa family estate in Valtuille de Abajo. He also worked as an oenologist-consultant for other domains in Bierzo. He refined the Mencia to unprecedented heights, also helped Ricardo and Alvaro Palacios start their top domain, while constantly tasting and trying other wines from around the world. Raúl is a restless nature and his curiosity and passion take him further and further.

Between 2005 and 2007 he left the family domain and left for a wine odyssey. In a few years he made a name for himself and became a real 'star' in the wine world. The common thread in his work is the recovery of vieilles vignes from indigenous grape varieties and the making of authentic wines with a lot of character and personality. Or to put it in his own words, "I'd rather make an undrinkably bad Galician wine, but at least let it be a Galician wine." He has therefore already vinified dozens of wines in countless different regions (mostly in the northwest of Spain, and also beyond), but which have never been marketed. He tests, he tries, and often fails. Of course, this way of working brings him a lot of experience, with which he will later be able to get the most out of one grape variety or one region.

Today he makes or contributes to more than 80 wines. In the end, he more or less settled himself by renovating two of his own mini-bodegas: one in the Tierra de León region, in the village of Valdevimbre, and another in his native Bierzo, where he is in the village of Salas de los Barrios. own Ultreia's, the absolute essence of Mencía. Raúl always works organically and as pure as possible. It uses the minimum of SO2. The wines we get from him are always in minimal quantities and we hardly ever know what we are going to get, from what year and how much ... That is Raúl in all.
