Description
history of Quinta de Soalheiro and region
Quinta de Soalheiro was founded in 1974 by João António Cerdeira and his parents in the Vinho Verde region, Monção e Melgaço subregion in northwestern Portugal. The estate is located on granite soil, at an altitude of up to 400 metres. The combination of warm, sunny days and cooler nights – enhanced by the proximity of the mountains – produces wines that are fresh, aromatic and mineral. Today, the winery is run by the third generation: Maria João and António Luís, with the support of their mother Maria Palmira. Their mission is to express the terroir authentically, with respect for tradition and quality.
grape varieties and wine range Soalheiro
Soalheiro is the specialist in the local white grape Alvarinho . Their range includes, in addition to the classic Alvarinho Clássico , the mineral Granit Alvarinho , the sparkling Pet Nat Alvarinho and the blend Allo , a combination of Alvarinho and Loureiro . This refreshing blend combines rich fruit tones with floral finesse, resulting in a versatile wine with character.
winemaking in soalheiro: climate and location
The vineyards are located on granite soils between 200 and 400 meters altitude. The microclimate is formed by warm days and cool nights, ideal for preserving fresh acids and aromas. The granite soil ensures deep root growth and gives the wines a subtle, salty minerality. By working with long ripening periods and mild day-night temperature differences, a beautiful balance between freshness and complexity is created.
introduction 2024 Soalheiro Allo
The 2024 Soalheiro Allo combines the characterful Alvarinho , known for tropical fruit and structure, with the flowery Loureiro , for extra finesse. This blend is distinguished by a perfect harmony between fruit, freshness and minerality, with a dry character and a lively finish.
harvest and vinification of Allo 2024
The grapes of the Allo are harvested by hand at the moment of optimum ripeness. After a gentle pressing under cool conditions, a soft clarification follows. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, without the use of oak. The wine is then matured on fine lees to develop extra structure and mouthfeel, without affecting the freshness.
color, odor and flavor profile of Allo
Colour : bright straw yellow with a light sheen, which lies invitingly in the glass.
Nose : powerfully aromatic with tropical fruits such as mango and passion fruit, combined with white flowers thanks to the Loureiro.
Taste : fresh, with a firm acid structure and a rich mouthfeel; the presence of minerals gives extra depth. The finish is dry and pleasantly long.

I tasted again the 2023 Allo, their only Alvarinho wine that is not 100% Alvarinho, as it's a blend of 30% Alvarinho and 70% Loureiro. The Alvarinho provides structure, while the Loureiro imparts more balsamic notes, with florals and aromas of bay leaf ("Loureiro" means "bay leaf" in the Portuguese language). It has only 11.5% alcohol and is light and fresh with very good acidity. It has had almost no development since I tasted it last year; it remains youthful and aromatic, pale and clean, with the freshness from the year, which is noted by the parameters of pH 3.25 and 6.2 grams of acidity. The full clusters were pressed, then the must fermented in stainless steel, and the wine was kept with lees for two months. It's clean, precise and very easy to drink but also serious and with a dry finish. I think I underestimated it last year... 150,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023.
Luis Cerdeira has left Soalheiro to start a new project with his son, but Soalheiro remains in the hands of his sister Maria João, who produces 900,000 bottles with the help of Spanish winemaker Asunción Carballo Gómez.
They have 95 hectares of vineyards ranging from 50 to five years of age, including an experimental vineyard at 1,100 meters in altitude! They also source grapes from growers, close to 80 hectares, to keep the consistency of their classical range and make experiments. They now have an Innovation Cellar, where they look for different profiles and try to take the Alvarinho grape variety to the limit. So, their range keeps growing...

Quinta de Soalheiro is located in the northernmost point of Portugal, in the sub-region of the Vinho Verde area, called Monção e Melgaço. Protected by a mountain range in the north, the vineyards are ideally located for growing the Alvarinho grape, with just enough of everything: sun, heat and rainfall. It was these unique circumstances that led João Antonio Cerdeira to plant his first alvarinho vineyard here in 1974. João has since been succeeded by his children Luis and Maria, who have further developed and perfected the company. Everything is done here with a great sense of detail. The vineyards are cultivated organically and the winemaking process has only one purpose: to make pure and harmonious wines. Soalheiro has a great reputation both in Portugal itself and abroad.
