Persoonlijke gegevens
Bodegas Juan Gil is an established name in Jumilla and is known for its modern style and focus on quality. The family business works with its own vineyards and gets the most out of local and lesser-known grape varieties. With the Ladera de las Bragas line, the house showcases a more direct and fresh style, in which drinkability and purity take center stage. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
This wine comes from Lagos de Arena, an area with sandy and stony soils that ensure good drainage and distinct minerality. The warm climate is partially offset by the location and soil structure, keeping the wine fresh and lively. This combination results in a style with both ripe fruit and tension.
Grapes and vineyard management
The 2024 Juan Gil Ladera de las Bragas Blanco is made from 100% Doña Blanca. This grape is known for its fresh acidity and subtle aromatic profile. The grapes are harvested by hand to preserve both ripeness and natural freshness.
Vinification and aging
After the harvest, a short cold maceration with the skins follows, after which the must is drained and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of approximately 15 degrees. This method ensures the preservation of freshness and aromatic purity. The wine is aimed at immediate drinking pleasure and is not aged in wood.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright straw-yellow color. On the nose, it is refined and expressive, with notes of white flowers such as jasmine, complemented by green apple, pear, and light citrus zest. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with a light body and distinct minerality. The acidity provides tension and ensures a tight and clean profile. The finish is clean, fresh, and lightly mineral, with a subtle citrus note that lingers.
Style and character
This is a light to medium-bodied white wine with a fresh and precise style. The emphasis is on pure fruit, lively acidity, and minerality. The wine is elegant and easy to drink, with a modern and direct expression that suits the character of the grape and the terroir well.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio
Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.
Organic/organic viticulture and sustainability are important elements in the vision of the Gil Family. Click here to see a nice video overview: Gil Family Estates - Video
