John Josh. Prüm and the reputation of Wehlener Sonnenuhr

Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most influential wineries in the Mosel region. The estate is known worldwide for Rieslings that excel in purity, elegance, and a slow, beautiful development. Under the leadership of Dr. Katharina Prüm, the style remains consistently focused on finesse: low alcohol, lively acidity, and an expressive minerality derived from the steep slopes along the river.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is undoubtedly one of Germany's most iconic vineyards. The combination of blue slate, optimal sun exposure, and centuries-old terraced structures produces Rieslings with unparalleled clarity and aromatic tension. The Spätlese from this vineyard is considered one of the region's most refined white wines every year.

The special character of the magnum bottle

This wine is bottled in a magnum format. A magnum ages more slowly, retains its freshness better, and develops complexity more gradually. A magnum is also ideal for festive occasions, as its presentation is both impressive and elegant.

The terroir of Wehlener Sonnenuhr

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is situated on steep slopes directly above the Mosel River. The soil consists almost entirely of blue slate, which ensures heat retention, optimal drainage, and a pronounced minerality. The vines benefit from perfect sun exposure and cool nighttime temperatures. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and retain vibrant acidity.

In 2024, conditions were ideal for a fresh, precise, and elegant style. The vineyard largely escaped the hail damage that hit other villages, allowing the fruit to be harvested in perfect health and purity.

The 2024 wine year on the Mosel

The spring of 2024 was wet and cooler than average, ensuring healthy vines and sufficient soil moisture. The summer saw some warmer days, but without extreme heat. Harvest took place between October 1st and 31st, with plot-by-plot selection to accurately capture the variable ripeness.

These conditions resulted in exceptionally aromatic Rieslings with brilliant acidity, pure fruit, and a precise minerality. The 2024 wines are considered classic, expressive, and exceptionally long-lived.

The Riesling grape in a refined Spätlese style

In the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Riesling displays a unique combination of ripe fruit, purity, and an almost salty tension. The 2024 Spätlese reveals notes of mandarin peel, white flowers, fresh garden herbs, and subtle slate smoke.

The sweetness is elegant and refined, supported by lively acidity that keeps the wine light and exciting. The aromatic precision and mineral depth ensure that this Spätlese can age effortlessly.

Vinification and maturation

Fermentation takes place slowly and coolly in stainless steel. The traditional method, without wood or artificial intervention, preserves the wine's purity. The wine then matures extensively on fine yeast, which provides structure and elegance without compromising its delicate character.

The result is a wine with subtle floral notes, citrus zest, ripe white fruit, and a variety of mineral nuances. The balance between sweetness and acidity is characteristic of the house.

Color, smell and taste of the 2024 Spätlese

The color is bright light yellow with green highlights. The aroma reveals honey blossom, fresh herbs, mandarin, and a subtle smoky slate aroma. The nose is precise, expressive, and elegant.

The palate is light-hearted yet intensely aromatic. The wine offers mandarin, citrus, white peach, and a delicate spiciness. The mineral tension and salinity provide a long, clean finish. The acidity is beautifully integrated, keeping the sweetness refined and refreshing.

Maturation potential

The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese has exceptional aging potential. The wine will develop over several decades. In the coming years, freshness will take center stage, while further aging will reveal honey, dried herbs, chamomile, and soft stone fruit notes.

Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for more than 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business.

Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.

The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
