Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm and the tradition of refined Mosel wines
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most renowned and consistent wineries in the Mosel region. For generations, the family has produced elegant Rieslings with low alcohol, high acidity, and intense aromatic precision. The wines are characterized by their transparency, crystal-clear structure, and impressive longevity. Under the leadership of Dr. Katharina Prüm, the estate continues this tradition with a combination of traditional methods, slow fermentation, and a focus on absolute purity.
The estate's reputation is closely linked to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, one of the Mosel's most iconic vineyards. This is where some of the most refined Auslesen wines originate, with a natural balance between fruity intensity and mineral freshness. These qualities were particularly evident in 2024, despite a challenging season with rain, hail, and variable ripening.
The terroir of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a steep, sun-drenched slope with a blue slate subsoil. This soil produces vibrant acidity, pronounced minerality, and a characteristic salty tension. The slopes have a perfect southerly exposure, allowing the Riesling grapes to fully ripen without losing their finesse.
In 2024, Wehlen's plots were spared the hail damage observed in Graach and Bernkastel. The wet spring, with almost double the rainfall, favored the deep roots of old vines on these steep slopes. The variable ripening resulted in an intensive, multi-phase harvest, with the best bunches carefully selected for Auslese.
The Riesling grape in a classic Auslese style
Riesling is the perfect grape for wines in the Auslese category. It can develop high concentration while retaining its juicy acidity and pure aromatic signature. The 2024 Auslese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr was made from perfectly ripe, healthy grapes without significant botrytis. This results in a very pure profile with an emphasis on fruit, floral nuances, and mineral freshness.
The style is sleek yet intense. The interplay of ripe white fruit, citrus, floral notes, and slate minerality makes the 2024 both exciting and refined. White peach and complex floral aromas are balanced by a subtle salty undertone, making this wine unique.
The 2024 harvest and vinification
The growing season began with a wet spring, which was beneficial for the water balance of the steep slopes. The summer was without extreme heat, allowing the Riesling to ripen evenly. August saw a few warm days, but these remained within the balanced season. The harvest took place from October 1st to 31st, interrupted by rain. It was precisely after this rain that the grapes for Auslese could be optimally selected.
As is customary with Joh. Jos. Prüm, the grapes were harvested in multiple rounds to determine the optimal ripeness for each plot. Fermentation takes place slowly and coolly, often with natural yeasts, allowing the aromatic details to fully develop. The result is a wine with a serene, precise sweetness and lively acidity.
Color, smell and taste of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese 2024
The color is light golden yellow with green highlights. The nose bursts with white peach, floral notes, and a subtle hint of citrus zest. Complex floral aromas intertwine with the mineral salinity of the slate soil. The wine displays both richness and refinement.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a remarkable vibrancy. The interplay of ripe peach, orange blossom, bergamot, and crystal-clear acidity creates an energetic and precise profile. The sweetness is present but never heavy, fully supported by the freshness. The finish is extremely long, salty, and racy, with a wonderful tension typical of the best Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslesen.
Maturation potential and development
This Auslese has enormous aging potential. Thanks to its combination of purity, aromatic intensity, and high acidity, the wine can age effortlessly until at least 2065. In its early years, it primarily displays freshness, elegant fruit, and floral notes. As the wine ages, more honey, spice, tea aromas, and soft, creamy nuances emerge.
Even now, it's deliciously drinkable thanks to the balance of ripe fruit and freshness, but patience is richly rewarded. For lovers of great, sweet Mosel wines, this vintage showcases the house's classic style at its finest.

Intense tropical fruit aromas such as fully ripe mangoes but also baby pineapples open the 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese that reveals a savory slate spice. On the palate, this is a rich yet savory and persistently saline, juicy and structured Auslese with a long and still mouth-filling finish. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 12 24 in January 2025.
At the renowned winery in Wehlen in January, I had to taste not only the last but also the penultimate vintage, i.e., 2023 alongside the 2022. I tasted both vintages one after the other, not side by side—the 2023 before lunch, the 2022 afterwards. I don't have a favorite, even though I had thought in advance that the 2023 vintage would have an easy time against its predecessor. But far from it. The hot and dry 2022s at Prüm turned out exceptionally well, and more than once I saw the 2022 ahead of the 2023, but I can't give a plausible reason for this. In any case, Katharina and her team have produced two great collections in two very different and challenging vintages.
The year 2023 began mild and wet. March in particular brought a lot of rain, which continued to a lesser extent into the rather cool April, so the soils were well moistened, quite unlike in 2022, when it was already too dry at this point. Budding did not begin until the end of April. The mild May and hot June were rather dry months. These conditions accelerated the growth of the buds and flowering. In July, there was more rain; and temperatures rose to 35 degrees Celsius at times, but there was also a cooler period with temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius. August was similar, with even more rain and fewer warm days. In September, temperatures barely dropped and averaged 3.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average. The harvest began very early on September 18 and ended on October 11. “As the temperatures remained warm in October and ripening progressed quickly, we made sure to complete the harvest as quickly as possible,” reports Katharina Prüm.
Prüm was able to harvest all grades from Kabinett to Beerenauslese, with the main focus on Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. The beautiful botrytis can be found again in a range from golden capsules to Beerenauslese. Overall, the wines of the 2023 vintage are classic in style: pure, clear, filigreed and fresh, with fine fruit ripeness, weightless elegance and stimulating crystalline acidity.
The year 2022 was one of the warmest and driest since records began and was characterized by unusually low rainfall between March and early September. This year also started with quite mild temperatures. While January was characterized by a lot of precipitation (63% above average), February already brought exceptionally mild temperatures. From March to April, temperatures returned to normal, although these months were already unusually dry.
Budding took place in the second half of April. May and June continued to be dry and very warm. Flowering took place early at the beginning of June. The weather conditions then became more extreme in July. It became significantly warmer and, above all, very dry. There were only two millimeters of precipitation in the entire month! “While temperatures normally start to drop in August, this was not the case in 2022,” says Prüm. “August was the warmest month of all.” Half of the month was over 30 degrees Celsius. Even though there was significantly more rain than in July, it remained very dry. It was not until September that the weather changed. The temperatures dropped and it started to rain—a great relief for nature in general. And according to Prüm, the rain did not harm the grapes.
The harvest began on September 19 and ended on October 22. Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese could be produced. And although it was not a vintage characterized by botrytis, Prüm was able to sort two gold capsules, in the Bernkasteler Lay and in the Graacher Himmelreich. There is a Lange Goldkapsel from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr.
Prüm's 2022s are surprisingly clear, taut and elegant and are not inferior to the 2023s in terms of quality, especially not the Spätlese and Auslese wines. This is possibly because Prüm carried out an extensive green harvest in the summer to relieve and preserve the vines and improve the quality of the grapes.

The interplay of white peach and complex floral flavors with salty minerality makes this Auslese really stand out. Concentrated but also very vibrant on the medium-bodied palate. Extremely long, salty finish with great drive and raciness. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, without any botrytis to speak of, flirts with peach bathed in orange zest with a gorgeous frisson of bergamot. It has a serene sweetness, delving deep into ripe, golden peach flesh. The 2024 is gorgeously framed with tangy citrus on a beautifully contoured body that is so racy, sleek and smooth. What a class act. (Sweet)

Dr. Katharina Prüm reported only marginal frost damage in Graach and Bernkastel, with Wehlen and Zeltingen spared completely. However, hail hit sites in Graach and Bernkastel, which meant limited quantities from these sites. The wet spring brought almost twice the average precipitation, a boon for the well-drained slopes. Apart from a few hot days in August, there were no extreme temperatures in the summer. Harvest took place between October 1 and 31, with a short break for rain. After the rain, Prüm was able to pick some Auslesen and Auslesen Goldkapsel. “We selected a lot and visited many parcels often due to relatively uneven ripeness within the same vine. We kept checking and picking what was right, so it turned into a laborious harvest,” she said. There is no Kabinett from the Badstube in 2024, due to frost and hail. The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive.

Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for more than 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business.
Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
