Description
Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family lie in the Mosel area for over 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business. JJ Prüm is without a doubt the winery with the most famous Riesling wines with almost unaffordable versions in between (in an overview of the 50 most expensive wines in the world is at number 5. Joh. Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerauslese with a price around 10,000 euros!!
The Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinet from Prum is a beautiful Riesling. Just like the Graacher Riesling from Prum, this wine has great balance, beautiful acidity with flowers, slate and a bit of saltiness with a spicy, lush finish in the mouth with the returning slate and tropical fruit flavors. Beautiful slightly chilled as an aperitif but certainly also recommended with white meat. Only 8% alcohol and always very high ratings from the international wine press.

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a discreet and sublime, complex and very elegant and slightly flinty nose with a coolish and very delicate expression of stewed apricots but also some greenish berries, whereas the first stony character remains. This irresistible and noble bouquet leads to a round and lush yet also refined and savory palate, with coolish apricot flavors on the long and sustainably salty finish that is firmly structured but elegant and highly stimulating. This is a superb, very elegant and complex, sustainably structured Sonnenuhr. This is already a great pleasure to drink, but you can keep this Kabinett for more than three decades easily. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 05 22 in July 2022.
Prüm's 2020s are without exception narrative Rieslings, shaped by their respective origins, which to taste always means pleasure and even relaxation but never real work. It will certainly not be easy for the 2021s to outdo the partly grandiose 2020s once these show fascinating clarity, finesse and elegance. Even Dr. Manfred Prüm, probably not a man of praise, had to admit at the end, "That was a highly enjoyable wine tasting; that's how I like it!" He wanted to explicitly praise his daughter Katharina for the 2020 vintage, but at the subsequent lunch he preferred to devote himself and us to two wines from the archive. Thank goodness Prüm wines speak for themselves anyway, so who needs praise?

This smells like walking into a high-class store, where a huge basket of peaches and nectarines is standing on the counter. Super-elegant and precise with a spot on balance of racy acidity, wet stone minerality and delicate fruit. Very long and pristine finish. Drink or hold.

Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
