Description
John Josh. Prüm and the classic Mosel style
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected wineries in the Mosel and is known worldwide for its pure, crystal-clear Rieslings. Led by Dr. Katharina Prüm, the estate produces wines with a unique combination of finesse, low alcohol, high acidity, and great aromatic depth. The style is timeless and focused on precision and restraint, with each vineyard expressing its own unique character.
The wines are fermented slowly and coolly, often with natural yeasts. This creates delicate aromatic layers and unparalleled purity. The slow aging in stainless steel ensures that fruit, acidity, and minerality remain in perfect harmony. The house's Spätlesen are among the most beloved wines from the Mosel region for their subtle sweetness and energetic tension.
The terroir of Bernkasteler Badstube
Bernkasteler Badstube is one of the most refined vineyards around Bernkastel. The steep, blue-slate slopes produce wines with clarity, finesse, and an expressive mineral core. The location offers slightly cooler conditions than, for example, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, resulting in a more restrained yet exceptionally elegant style.
In 2024, this plot was hit by frost and hail, which severely limited production but increased its concentration. The wet spring brought almost twice as much rain as usual, which benefited the slate soils. The following summer was free of extreme heat, allowing the Riesling to ripen evenly and aromatically. The harvest took place between October 1st and 31st and was characterized by intensive selection due to varying ripeness within a single plot.
Riesling in a refined Spätlese style
Riesling is the ideal grape for Spätlese wines, which combine aromatic ripeness with an elegant sweetness. The 2024 vintage in Bernkasteler Badstube yielded particularly expressive aromas. Due to the limited yield, caused by frost and hail, the fruit was even more concentrated than usual.
The nose reveals a broad spectrum of aromas, ranging from herbs and spices to ripe mandarin, green citrus, and floral notes. The interplay of ripe fruit and fresh acidity makes the wine energetic, charming, and remarkably pure. The alcohol remains low, giving the wine a lighthearted elegance.
Vinification and development of the 2024
As is customary with Joh. Jos. Prüm, the grapes were harvested in multiple passes to gently select the optimal ripeness per plot. After harvest, the wine was slowly fermented and then aged extensively in tank. The vinification is simple yet meticulous, focused on maximum expression of terroir and grape variety without any excess.
The 2024 season produced a wine with balance, vibrancy, and subtle concentration. Due to the limited yield, this vintage is even more refined and aromatic than usual. The wine displays everything that makes Bernkasteler Badstube so special: elegance, tension, and a crystalline character.
Colour, smell and taste of Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese 2024
In the glass, the wine displays a pale gold color with greenish reflections. The nose is remarkably open and aromatic, with notes of lemon balm, chervil, green citrus, and a light floral sweetness. Ripe mandarin and a hint of moss add depth and refinement.
On the palate, the wine is fresh and transparent. A subtle sweetness is immediately followed by vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral note. The palate is reminiscent of orange, green mandarin, lime, and a hint of spice. The structure is slender, elegant, and clear. The finish is extremely long, salty, and exceptionally clean, with a brilliant, slightly spicy finish.
Maturation potential and development
This Spätlese is already delightfully approachable, but will continue to develop for years to come. The combination of high acidity, low alcohol, and concentrated fruit gives the wine ageing potential until at least 2055. After a few years in the bottle, honey, tea, and dried fruit will become more subtle, while the mineral tension remains.
For lovers of classic Mosel Spätlese styles, this vintage offers both finesse and energy. Its limited production also makes it highly sought after.

This beautiful Spatlese has an extremely wide spectrum of aromas that range from garden herbs to fully ripe mandarin oranges. Then comes the very elegant, racy, barely medium-bodied palate, which has great purity and length in the brilliant finish. Limited production due to spring frost damage. Drink or hold.

From: 2024 Mosel, Saar and Ruwer: Tales of Woe and Wow (Oct 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese is so openly fragrant and shimmering with chervil, moss and a beautiful overtone of lemon balm. More air brings a fine, gorgeous, charming note of green citrus peel. The palate has a tart sweetness, like a Seville orange peel or green-tinged tangerine. The 2024 is seductive, brilliant, toned, bright, elegant and absolutely charming. (Medium)
- By Anne Krebiehl MW on August 2025
Dr. Katharina Prüm reported only marginal frost damage in Graach and Bernkastel, with Wehlen and Zeltingen spared completely. However, hail hit sites in Graach and Bernkastel, which meant limited quantities from these sites. The wet spring brought almost twice the average precipitation, a boon for the well-drained slopes. Apart from a few hot days in August, there were no extreme temperatures in the summer. Harvest took place between October 1 and 31, with a short break for rain. After the rain, Prüm was able to pick some Auslesen and Auslesen Goldkapsel. “We selected a lot and visited many parcels often due to relatively uneven ripeness within the same vine. We kept checking and picking what was right, so it turned into a laborious harvest,” she said. There is no Kabinett from the Badstube in 2024, due to frost and hail. The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive.

Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for more than 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business.
Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
