Persoonlijke gegevens
The Burgundian Morey wine family is widely branched, with deep roots in Chassagne-Montrachet, a small, picturesque village 15 km south of Beaune. The Marc Morey estate is managed by Bernard Mollard, Marc Morey's son-in-law. Bernard Mollard is a passionate wineman with an exceptional sense for quality. Winemaker Bernard and Sabine Mollard specializes in producing terroir-driven Burgundies, such as those from Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet, in various grades. Respect for the terroir is the keyword at Marc Morey. The vines are pruned for optimal yields. The soil is worked year-round. For several years, the estate has been located in Chassagne-Montrachet near Beaune in the Côte-d'Or department.
This Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru is a 100% Chardonnay from a vineyard situated on clay-limestone soil. After hand-picking, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks under strict temperature control. Subsequently, the young wine is transferred to one-year-old oak barrels where it rests on its lees until the end of malolactic fermentation, with regular bâtonnage (stirring) of the lees. This enhances the wine's mineral character and provides more structure and creaminess. After 10 months, the wine is racked, clarified, and (depending on the vintage) lightly filtered before bottling.
The Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru has a delicious, precise bouquet of yellow flowers and a light limestone scent, with a hint of blackberry leaf. It has an intense nose, ripe, fruity, and mineral, with a hint of butter and vanilla and well-integrated oak nuances. The palate is well-balanced with candied orange peel on the attack and the typical limestone terroir expression. On the tongue, pure purity, minerality, delicate fresh taste, balanced structure, with a complex, persistent mineral finish.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes derives from five-year-old vines, but you'd hardly know it. Exhibiting aromas of white flowers, pear, toasted nuts and subtle reduction, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with a fleshy core of fruit and a precise finish.
I've wanted to visit Domaine Marc Morey for several years, as this discreet Chassagne-Montrachet has long produced excellent wines that fly somewhat under the radar. Its origins go back to great-grandfather Fernand Morey, whose whites and reds I've adored and who presided over winemaking between 1919 and around 1950. The eponymous Marc Morey was his son, who ran the domaine for the second half of the twentieth century. Today, it's Sabine Mollard who presides, having joined the family estate in 2003. Fruit is gently crushed and pressed pneumatically, with a short and comparatively static cycle, followed by debourbage overnight at 12 degrees centigrade and the beginning of alcoholic fermentation in tank before barreling down. Working with a wide variety of coopers (including Chassin and François Frères), Sabine stirs the lees until the end of malolactic fermentation. Regional appellations see nine months in barrel, with the rest racked to tank just before harvest and bottled, under natural cork, in early spring.

Domaine Marc Morey & Fils 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru
White wine from France
Drinking window: 2027 - 2037
The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru is a clear level up from the Village Cru with great delineation and terroir expression, hints of white peach and clementine, later pressed flowers. The palate is fresh and a little flinty on the entry, modest depth, light in substance but tensile with a judicious dash of spice towards the finish. Drink over the next decade.
