Description
Brothers Didier and Denis (and their son Bruno) Larue run their estate in Gamay, a hamlet northeast of Saint-Aubin. The vineyards are therefore situated "on the right side" of Saint-Aubin, namely near Chassagne and Puligny Montrachet. Besides producing a large portion of Saint-Aubin, the estate also produces wines from Chassagne and Puligny Montrachet, appellations that are more appealing because they produce some of the world's best white wines. The family has owned vineyards for several generations, but Didier and Denis decided to bottle them themselves. In a short time, they have built an excellent reputation for an honest, pure, teroir-focused style at relatively competitive prices. The vineyard is meticulously managed: short pruning and green harvesting ensure a low yield per hectare. Pesticides are used sparingly, and the grapes are picked by hand.
The Aligoté grapes for Domaine Larue Vieilles Vignes Bourgone Aligoté are grown in the regional and communal appellation area around Saint-Aubin. Facing east, at an altitude of 380 meters, lies a primary vineyard of 50 ares (1.83 acres) on white marl on a hilltop on the outskirts of La Rochepot. To the east, at an altitude of 330 meters, lies another vineyard of 46 ares (1.83 acres) on a plateau of shallow red soil. These old vines of the Aligoté variety (ranging from 30 to 70 years old) are planted at a density of 10,000 vines/ha over an area of 1 ha 12 (11,200 m²).
After careful monitoring of ripeness, the grapes are harvested by hand and transported in small crates to the winery. The grapes are lightly crushed. The juice flows from a pneumatic press. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at a low temperature in stainless steel vats, followed by aging on fine lees. Malolactic fermentation occurs early, allowing for bottling in the spring. This Bourgogne Aligoté has a light straw yellow color with aromas of white flowers and white fruit, a hint of saltiness, and a touch of chalk (mineral). On the palate, this beautiful Domaine Larue Vieilles Vignes Bourgone Aligoté is fresh and appealing, deliciously drinkable, fruity, and very elegant.
