Château Troplong Mondot 2024 – Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé
Château Troplong Mondot is situated at the highest point of Saint-Émilion and boasts an exceptional terroir of limestone and ferruginous clay. The 33-hectare vineyard forms an amphitheater around the château, benefiting from excellent exposure and drainage. This unique location contributes to the wine's characteristic freshness, tension, and mineral undertones.
Grapes and blend of the 2024 Troplong Mondot
The 2024 vintage is composed of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. This blend emphasizes the rich, juicy fruit of the Merlot, the refinement and aromatic lift of the Cabernet Franc, and a subtle structural enhancement of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Harvest and vinification
The harvest took place between September 25th and October 4th. Thanks to the grapes' airy cluster structure, full ripening could be achieved without risk of rot. Vinification was carried out without chaptalization, with a strong focus on precision and terroir expression. Aging took place in 55% new French oak barrels, 26% large foudres, and 19% one-year-old barrels – a balanced approach that allows the wine's character to fully express itself.
Tasting note of Troplong Mondot 2024
Troplong Mondot 2024 presents itself with a deep ruby-red color and an expressive nose of black cherries, cassis, violets, lavender, menthol, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, the wine is silky and layered, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and a striking chalky minerality. The structure is taut and lively, with a long, salty, and elegant finish.
Style and potential
This vintage confirms the estate's shift in style toward greater finesse and terroir-driven character. The wine is powerful without being heavy, with a natural freshness and great precision. Troplong Mondot 2024 is a wine with a clear signature and impressive complexity, which will develop beautifully in the cellar until at least 2065.

The 2024 Troplong Mondot is a beauty, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries and licorice mingled with hints of violet and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, dense and deep, it's one of the more layered and muscular wines of the vintage, a quality this terroir seems to invariably deliver, with sweet tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, expansive finish. -

Score: 94-95. Château Troplong Mondot St.-Emilion 2024.
A crunchy and vivid red with blackberry, black olive and walnut character. It’s medium- to full-bodied with medium-round tannins and a creamy, textured finish. I like the citrus and chalk undertones. 85% merlot, 13% cabernet sauvignon and 2% cabernet franc.

The 2024 Troplong Mondot was matured in 55% new oak, 26% in 20-hectolitre foudres and 19% in used barrels. It offers minerally, tightly wound black fruit, blueberry and light chalky scents. Very fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant yet tensile tannins. Like the Mondot, it is peppery in style, pretty and sapid towards the finish. Not a huge amount of persistence, yet this is still a serious Saint-Émilion that could well end up at the top of my banded score.

“It [2024] was complicated,” admitted Aymeric de Gironde, together with Technical Director Rémi Monribot. “There was a lot of work. We had the highest rain ever, then two months without a drop, then more rain in September. For us, the rain in the growing season was annoying and created a lot of mildew pressure, though it’s been like that for the last six years. Spring will always have episodes of rain, and it comes when the vines are in leaf, so you must plan ahead. We’ve increased grass cover between the rows, around 35% of the vineyard. We don’t perceive mildew as a threat, and being located on a hill helps us.”
Aymeric de Gironde continued, “Flowering was fairly slow and uneven, with a bit of coulure and millerandage that created less compact clusters. In summer, we had a nice steady maturation. It was challenging but not impossible. In April, we anticipated picking from September 4, but we ended up picking from September 20. Harvest lasted three weeks. The choice was between quantity and maturity. We chose the latter, so we cropped at 35 hl/ha and made huge selections as we went along. This was a vintage for those with the means to wait and potentially lose some production. Troplong Mondot has a natural density of wine from the parcels in the heart of the vineyards that means we do well in cooler vintages. We didn’t have to extract too hard, as the density was naturally present.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Troplong Mondot is a total stunner. As has been the case for some years now, the Grand Vin is blended before being barreled down, which means at the time of tasting en primeur, the wine has seen less wood than the vast majority of its peers. That lends this wine a certain raw energy that is impossible to miss. The purity and intensity of the flavors are simply remarkable. Troplong Mondot is one of the standouts of 2024. Even in this vintage, Troplong Mondot possesses remarkable textural presence, but that richness is matched by notable freshness and linear drive. It was deeply impressive on the two occasions I tasted it. Élevage is planned to be 55% in new oak, 26% in 20HL barrels and 19% in once-used barrels.
