Château Palmer: historic estate in Margaux

Château Palmer is located in the prestigious Margaux appellation, in the heart of the Médoc. Founded in 1814 by the English Colonel Charles Palmer, the estate has become one of Bordeaux's most respected Grand Cru Classés. Since 1998, Château Palmer has been owned by the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families, with Thomas Duroux as managing director since 2004. Under his leadership, a biodynamic approach was introduced, and the estate has become a benchmark for finesse, terroir expression, and balance.

Location, climate and terroir of Château Palmer

Château Palmer's vineyards are situated on the famous Margaux pebble plateau, with deep gravel layers that ensure optimal drainage and heat retention. The temperate maritime climate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde Estuary, promotes even ripening. The 66 hectares of vineyards are planted with approximately 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. The combination of terroir, age of the vines, and biodynamic cultivation makes Château Palmer a unique estate in the region.

Grape varieties and harvest of Château Palmer 2024

The 2024 vintage consists of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot. Harvest took place from September 25 to October 10, 2024, under challenging climatic conditions. Above-average rainfall and early powdery mildew pressure necessitated meticulous vineyard management. Thanks to careful selection and the biodynamic approach, the grape quality remained excellent. Yields were 22 hectoliters per hectare – low, but with highly aromatic and concentrated fruit.

Vinification and maturation of Château Palmer 2024

Fermentation took place in concrete vats, with gentle extraction to preserve the tannins' elegance. The wine then aged in French oak barrels, some of which were new, for 20 to 22 months. The blending took place after intensive tastings, with the final blend being created from plots of land with harmony and depth. Thanks to this careful approach, the 2024 is a balanced and characterful wine with a bright future.

Color, aroma and flavor profile of Château Palmer 2024

Château Palmer 2024 presents itself with a deep ruby-red color. The nose is highly complex, with notes of black cherry, blackberry, violet, graphite, and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is simultaneously refined and powerful, with a silky texture and perfectly integrated tannins. The balance between fruit, acidity, and oak is impeccable, and the finish is long and intense with a mineral freshness. While seductive even when young, the wine has excellent aging potential of at least 20 to 30 years.

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
