Château Palmer: historic estate in Margaux
Château Palmer is located in the prestigious Margaux appellation, in the heart of the Médoc. Founded in 1814 by the English Colonel Charles Palmer, the estate has grown to become one of Bordeaux's most respected Grand Cru Classés. Since 1998, Château Palmer has been owned by the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families, with Thomas Duroux as director since 2004. Under his leadership, a biodynamic approach was introduced and the estate has become a reference for finesse, terroir expression and balance.
Location, climate and terroir of Château Palmer
The vineyards of Château Palmer are located on the famous pebble plateau of Margaux, with deep gravel layers that ensure optimum drainage and heat retention. The temperate maritime climate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde, promotes an even ripening. The 66 hectares of vineyards are planted with approximately 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. The combination of terroir, age of the vines and biodynamic cultivation makes Château Palmer a unique domain within the region.
Grape varieties and harvest of Château Palmer 2024
The 2024 vintage consists of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot. The harvest took place from 25 September to 10 October 2024, under challenging climatic conditions. Above-average rainfall and early mildew pressure required precise work in the vineyard. Thanks to careful selection and the biodynamic approach, the grape quality remained excellent. The yield was 22 hectoliters per hectare – low, but with very aromatic and concentrated fruit.
Vinification and maturation of Château Palmer 2024
Fermentation took place in concrete vats, with gentle extraction to keep the tannins elegant. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, some of which were new, for a period of 20 to 22 months. The assembly took place after intensive tastings, with the final blend being built from plots with harmony and depth. Thanks to this careful approach, the 2024 is a balanced and characterful wine with a great future.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of Château Palmer 2024
Château Palmer 2024 presents itself with a deep ruby red color. In the nose a lot of complexity with notes of black cherries, blackberries, violets, graphite and subtle spices. In the mouth the wine is refined and powerful at the same time, with a silky texture and perfectly integrated tannins. The balance between fruit, acidity and wood is flawless, and the finish is long and intense with a mineral freshness. The wine is seductive when young, but has an excellent aging potential of at least 20 to 30 years.

The 2024 Palmer is shaping up beautifully and stands out as one of the wines of the vintage in the Médoc. Wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis, plums, cigar wrapper and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with good depth at the core, sweet structuring tannins and a long, precise finish. Uniting charm with seriousness, this blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot is the quintessential Palmer. Yields after sorting worked out at 22 hectoliters per hectare.

Excellent depth and good purity of fruit, showing lots of blackcurrants, dark minerals and violet extract. Full-bodied, this has plenty of fine-grained tannins and a hallmark Palmer tannin structure and framework. Quite tight and juicy at the end with a lasting finish and lots of volume. 13.2% alcohol.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Palmer is aged in 50% new oak for the first few months before it is transferred into 3,000-liter foudres. There is quite a stylistic difference between the Palmer and the Alter Ego on the nose: this is more sensual and displays more fruit concentration. Blackberry, blueberry, slate and light graphite scents unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and less voluptuous than recent vintages with an uncommon sense of symmetry, finely chiselled tannins and impressive tension on the slightly peppery finish. Excellent.
- By Neal Martin on April 2025
Thomas Duroux welcomed me to Palmer, where there has been a great deal of rebuilding the so-called “village” in recent years. Indeed, the cluster of outbuildings does give the impression of a small community.
“It was a challenging spring with a lot of mildew pressure. July and August were much better, then there was rain again at harvest. There was a lot of work in the vineyard, and a small crop due to coulure that affected the Merlot. The small yield was not a bad thing because of the growing conditions—22 hl/ha. We took a risk at harvest in order to pick in the best conditions. We started on September 25 and finished on October 10. Ten percent of the crop was deselected, while 55% of the volume went into the Alter Ego. There is a little more Cabernet in the blend this year at around 60%. The challenge is to make wine with identity.”
I enquired about whether being biodynamic made the vintage more difficult. “It’s more challenging when you’re biodynamic. But the vineyard is rebalanced, so its sensitivity to mildew is reduced. You had to be in the vineyard all the time, and that would not be sustainable every year.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Palmer is wonderfully vivid and expressive. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections make a strong first impression. Blue/purplish fruit, gravel, lavender, incense, licorice and dried herbs all jump from the glass. I imagine the 2024 will drink well on release, which is uncharacteristic for young Palmer. Readers will find a gorgeous wine with tons of character and pedigree to burn. Palmer remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux.

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
