Behind every great wine lies a great terroir. This is certainly true of Château Palmer, situated on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. The land is well-drained, rich in sediments from the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, yet cleansed of organic matter. It's challenging soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grape growing. Naturally, the vines also require proper care to perform optimally. And the Château Palmer team is certainly entrusted with this! With passion and love for the vines, they cultivate this demanding terroir. The men and women of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together, they embrace the shared core values of Château Palmer and are therefore exceptionally dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded, and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
The story behind Château Palmer and Alter Ego
Château Palmer, located in the renowned Margaux appellation in the Médoc, is one of Bordeaux's most respected Grand Cru Classés. Since the 19th century, it has been known for its powerful yet silky wines. Under the leadership of Thomas Duroux, the estate has been fully biodynamic since 2008. Alter Ego de Palmer was introduced in 1998 as a "different expression" of the terroir: not a second wine in the traditional sense, but a distinct cuvée with its own personality.
Margaux terroir and biodynamic approach
Château Palmer's vineyards are situated on deep Garonne gravel, characteristic of Margaux. The soils provide excellent drainage and heat retention. Thanks to the temperate maritime climate, the grapes benefit from long, balanced ripening cycles. Palmer practices biodynamic agriculture, where natural preparations and calendar cycles form the basis for healthy soil and vibrant fruit.
Grape composition and harvest data for 2024
The Alter Ego 2024 blend consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. Harvest took place between September 25 and October 10, 2024, earlier than usual due to persistent autumn rains. Despite a difficult spring with powdery mildew and coulure on the older Merlot vines, the summer drought and careful selection ultimately yielded fruit of high aromatic quality. The yield was 22 hectoliters per hectare.
Vinification and maturation of Alter Ego de Palmer 2024
The grapes were fermented plot by plot in concrete vats, with gentle extraction and complete control over temperature and fermentation. The wine then matures for approximately 18 months in partially new French oak. The blending process was crucial: each component was carefully tasted and selected to achieve harmony. Alter Ego is vinified with the same precision as Château Palmer, but with the aim of creating a slightly more accessible style.
Color, aroma and taste of Alter Ego de Palmer 2024
The wine has a deep ruby red color with purple hues. The nose reveals aromas of cherries, blackberries, rose petals, dried herbs, and a hint of cedar. On the palate, the wine is juicy and balanced, with a silky tannic structure and plenty of freshness. The finish is long, mineral, and spicy. This 2024 is both expressive and subtle, making it an excellent wine for short- to medium-term enjoyment, but also for aging.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Alter Ego is first aged in barrel with 20% new oak and then transferred into 3,000-liter foudres. It has a very pure bouquet, focused and more concentrated than expected with blackcurrant, raspberry, incense and light violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh with crisp tannins and hints of black olive and fennel. This Alter Ego is leaner and more linear than in warmer seasons. Crisp and taut on the finish, the 2024 will deserve a couple of years in bottle. Very fine.

Thomas Duroux welcomed me to Palmer, where there has been a great deal of rebuilding the so-called “village” in recent years. Indeed, the cluster of outbuildings does give the impression of a small community.
“It was a challenging spring with a lot of mildew pressure. July and August were much better, then there was rain again at harvest. There was a lot of work in the vineyard, and a small crop due to coulure that affected the Merlot. The small yield was not a bad thing because of the growing conditions—22 hl/ha. We took a risk at harvest in order to pick in the best conditions. We started on September 25 and finished on October 10. Ten percent of the crop was deselected, while 55% of the volume went into the Alter Ego. There is a little more Cabernet in the blend this year at around 60%. The challenge is to make wine with identity.”
I enquired about whether being biodynamic made the vintage more difficult. “It’s more challenging when you’re biodynamic. But the vineyard is rebalanced, so its sensitivity to mildew is reduced. You had to be in the vineyard all the time, and that would not be sustainable every year.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Alter Ego is a very sexy, polished wine. Silky contours wrap around a core of dark red-toned fruit. Floral and spice overtones lend brightness to a mid-weight, supple Alter Ego that will drink well right out of the gate. Pliant and inviting, with no hard edges, the 2024 is an absolute delight. Hints of cedar, tobacco, incense and white pepper linger on the brilliant, sculpted finish.
