Château Margaux is one of the most famous wineries in the world. It is located in Bordeaux, near the town of Margaux. Château Margaux is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé according to the Bordeaux wine classification system of 1855. The estate comprises 82 hectares of red wine and 12 hectares of white wine. These 94 hectares are planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. For the white wine, 12 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc. The estate's second wine is called Pavillon Rouge. The white wine "Pavillon Blanc" is considered the finest white wine of the Médoc. Since 2009, Château Margaux has also produced a third wine called "Margaux du Château Margaux." This third wine has been produced since 1997 but was always sold in bulk to other wineries until 2009. As one of the largest and best-known producers in the Margaux, Chateau Margaux produces an average of 25,000 cases of their Grand Vin.
2024 Château Margaux: a vintage of finesse and balance
The 2024 vintage began cool and wet, but was followed by a sunny summer with favorable ripening conditions. Harvest took place between September 11th and 30th under perfect weather conditions. The wine combines rare freshness with ripe fruit, silky tannins, and a refined structure. Château Margaux 2024 holds long-term promise, yet its balance will also demonstrate charm in its youth.
Grape varieties, harvest and vinification of the wine
The 2024 Château Margaux blend consists of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes were carefully hand-picked and rigorously selected in both the vineyard and cellar. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 to 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels. This classic vinification process ensures depth, aromatic precision, and aging potential.
Color, aroma and taste of Château Margaux 2024
The wine presents itself with a deep ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose reveals a rich expression of blackcurrant, violets, cedar, graphite, and subtle notes of truffle and licorice. The palate is harmonious, with a silky texture and great refinement. The structure is impressive yet not heavy, supported by precise acidity and ripe, velvety tannins. The finish is long, mineral, and layered.

The 2024 Château Margaux has turned out beautifully, unfurling in the glass with notes of cassis, violets, cigar box and iris. Medium to full-bodied, deep and vibrant, with excellent density and concentration for the vintage, it's lively and layered, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. This is a serious, youthfully tightly wound blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc that attained 12.8% alcohol.
Philippe Bascaules reported yields averaging 30 hectoliters per hectare at Château Margaux, while noting that Merlot on clay-limestone was hit worst by mildew, with yields as low as 10 hectoliters per hectare in places, whereas Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel fared much better. Given Cabernet on gravel always represents the core of Margaux's blend, fully 46% of the estate's production went into the grand vin, somewhat more than usual. Bascaules noted that here (as elsewhere), the season favored early-ripening parcels, which consistently delivered the best results, whereas later-ripening plots were prone to pyrazine and green tannins so didn't make it into either the grand vin or the Pavillon Rouge (the latter representing 28% of Margaux's production). Fermentation temperatures were somewhat warmer, with twice-daily pump-overs and somewhat longer macerations—essentially a return to the model that was de rigueur at the estate 20 years ago.

Really impressive depth, concentration and perfume this year, with fine tannins. Lots of violets, red flowers, black cherries and currants. Full-bodied and seriously structured, with impeccable freshness and a very long finish. Dense and powerful for the vintage, with tension, vibrations, good concentration and a tannin framework. 93% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 1% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Château Margaux is quite soft and delicate. It shows fine delineation in its aromatics and on the palate, but it's distinctly on the lighter side, even for Château Margaux. The mid-palate and finish are a touch compact, while there is a bit of edginess in the tannins that needs time to resolve. Bright acids and the lack of fruit pliancy expose the tannins at this stage. Élevage will be everything. Château Margaux is a bit of a question mark.

Château Margaux is one of those names in the wine world that instantly sparks the imagination. A stately château, centuries of history, and wines that rank among the very best of Bordeaux.
History of Château Margaux
The roots of Château Margaux go back to the Middle Ages, when the estate was still known as Lamothe. In the 16th century, the Lestonnac family began transforming the land into a vineyard with serious ambition. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands many times, but the reputation steadily grew. In the early 19th century, the Marquis de la Colonilla built the current château, a refined neo-Palladian building that still dominates the skyline of Margaux today.
In 1855, Château Margaux was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé, the highest ranking in the famous Bordeaux classification. Yet the estate also faced harder times. In the 1970s its reputation began to fade, until Greek businessman André Mentzelopoulos revived it. Since then, Château Margaux has remained tied to his family and is now run by his daughter Corinne and her children.
Location and terroir of Château Margaux
The estate lies in the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde, within the Margaux AOC. This appellation is known for elegant and refined red wines. The soil at Château Margaux is distinctive: deep layers of gravel with touches of clay and limestone. The gravel provides excellent drainage, forcing the vines to root deeply. This results in grapes with great concentration and tension, the foundation of the estate’s renowned wines.
Grape varieties of Château Margaux
As is typical in the Médoc, Cabernet Sauvignon takes the lead. Around three-quarters of the vineyards are planted with it. Merlot makes up about twenty percent, with smaller plots of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This blend gives the wines both power and finesse. For whites there’s a rare exception: Pavillon Blanc, made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc, grown on a smaller plot next to the red vineyards.
Château Margaux wine styles
The most famous wine is of course the Grand Vin de Château Margaux. Then there is Pavillon Rouge, the second wine often made from younger vines or parcels that don’t make it into the first selection. More recently, a third label has been added: Margaux du Château Margaux. For white wine lovers there is Pavillon Blanc, praised for its freshness and long ageing potential.
Winemaking combines tradition and modern technique. The red wines age for about one and a half to two years in new French oak, giving them depth and complexity. The white wine is aged for a shorter time, preserving its lively character. A special detail: Château Margaux even has its own cooperage, giving them full control over the quality of their barrels.
Interesting facts
- Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, praised Château Margaux in the 18th century as one of the finest wines of Bordeaux.
- The château itself is a listed historical monument and is often described as one of the most beautiful wine estates in France.
- In 2015, a new tasting and research building was unveiled, designed by British architect Norman Foster, blending tradition and innovation.
