Description
EN PRIMEUR DISCOUNT VALID UNTIL 31/12/2026 - DELIVERY SPRING 2027
Château la Mission Haut-Brion is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, classified as Crus Classés in the 1953 Graves classification. La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister estate of Château Haut-Brion. The winery belongs to the Graves wine region, in the commune of Talence with an additional estate in Pessac. The winery also produces a second wine from younger vines, La Chapelle de la Mission, since the 1991 vintage, and the dry white wine Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc since the merger of Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010.
The vineyards extend over 21 hectares between Pessac and Léognan, with a distribution of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. The estate produces an average of between 6,000 and 7,000 cases of its grand vin La Mission Haut-Brion each year. The second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission, produces an average of 4,000 cases. The white Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, has an annual production of 500 to 700 cases.
Rich and layered Bordeaux with structure, freshness and impressive balance.
Climate and growing season of harvest year 2024
The 2024 growing season was marked by a cooler and wetter winter than average, leading to early bud break in mid-March. Persistent rain slowed growth, and fungal diseases required extra attention. The weather improved significantly in July, and careful vineyard work – such as leaf thinning – optimised air circulation and ripening. A dry northeasterly wind in September contributed to healthy, concentrated grapes, resulting in an even, precise harvest between 18 September and 2 October.
Grape varieties and blend of Château La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge 2024
The blend of the 2024 vintage consists of 46.5% Merlot, 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Cabernet Franc. The provisional alcohol content is 13.2%. The wine was vinified with great care, using only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. Maturation takes place in 75% new French oak barrels, which contributes to the complexity and structure without masking the freshness.
Color, aroma and taste of Château La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge 2024
The wine shows a deep garnet red colour with purple reflections. On the nose it is powerful, complex and intense, with aromas of red and black fruits, such as black cherry and blackberry, complemented by hints of liquorice and spices. When swirled, the bouquet opens up further and shows itself exceptionally layered. On the palate the attack is full and fleshy. The wine develops smoothly, with an impressive texture, ripe tannins and a long, harmonious finish. Despite the climatic challenges, this vintage offers a beautiful result that combines structural strength and elegant freshness.

Notes of dark berries, spices, mulberries and discreet hints of new oak preface the 2024 La Mission Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, dense and attractively seamless wine for the vintage, with a textural mid-palate that's underpinned by a firm chassis of tannins, concluding with a long, broad and rather ripe finish. Slightly austere at this stage, it is likely to flesh out with élevage, developing into a structured and serious La Mission with promising aging potential. Like its sibling Haut-Brion, the estate benefited from its intramural location in Pessac, which allowed for more complete ripening in a year that posed greater challenges for some other Pessac-Léognan properties.

A precise, classic vintage showing depth of fruit, but with beautiful austerity and minerals. Mostly red fruit, with touches of dark cherries and currants. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine-etched tannins and lots of brightness. So long and refined in the finish, showing restraint. 51% cabernet sauvignon, 46.5% merlot and 2.5% cabernet franc.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 La Mission Haut-Brion has a beautifully defined bouquet with pure, mineral-led black fruit, hints of blueberry and a subtle sea spray influence. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins. Fresh and vibrant, this La Mission feels very cohesive and sophisticated. No, there is not the depth and persistence of a top-drawer vintage, but its noticeable complexity is a cut above.

“This year, we could not avoid mildew. It came when the grapes were fragile and sensitive. That entailed a lot of work in the vineyard. Flowering was uneven, with coulure and millerandage. Concentration really only came with a heatwave on July 27, but before that, it was quite cold. At harvest, we decided to focus on the ripe parcels, which means the yields are quite low: 25 hl/ha. Yields were more normal for the whites, at 38 hl/ha. We picked from September 2 to 10 for the whites, the reds from September 17 until October 4. Also, we used different sorting systems: densimetric, optical and manual. We were careful with the extraction, with shorter pump-overs—three-quarters of the vat were pumped over every six hours to avoid tough tannins. We have a little more Cabernet, as the Merlot was affected by the mildew. At Quintus in Saint-Émilion, there were fewer problems with mildew. But, it was more complicated with rain at the end of the harvest, so the picking took place quickly, from September 24 to October 4.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 La Mission Haut-Brion is such a classy wine. Strong floral and savory notes meld into a core of plum, blackberry, gravel, spice, leather, tobacco and incense. Medium in body, with no hard edges, the 2024 is a delight. It offers lovely freshness and energy throughout. There is a bit of graininess in the tannin, a reminder of the challenges of the growing season.
