Château Haut-Brion and the origin of Le Clarence
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine from the renowned Château Haut-Brion, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Bordeaux. Founded in the 16th century, Château Haut-Brion has been owned by the Dillon family since 1935. Le Clarence was introduced in 2007 as the successor to Haut-Brion Rouge's second label, with a clear identity that exudes finesse and the signature of the terroir. The wine is made from the estate's younger vines, with the same meticulous vinification as the Grand Vin.
Climate and growing conditions in the 2024 harvest year
The 2024 vintage experienced a cool growing season, preceded by a mild, wet winter. Early bud formation was delayed by persistent rain, resulting in more even growth. Defoliation and other vineyard management practices were implemented during the summer to promote air circulation around the bunches. In early September, a dry northeasterly wind helped improve grape ripeness. The red grapes were harvested between September 17 and October 4, with strict selection based on ripeness and cluster health.
Grape varieties, blend and vinification of Le Clarence 2024
The blend of Le Clarence de Haut-Brion Rouge 2024 is composed of 45.7% Merlot, 32.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 22% Cabernet Franc. The preliminary alcohol content is 13.1%. The wine was vinified with the same precision as the Grand Vin, but is aged in a lower proportion of new oak: 31%. The greater presence of Merlot and Cabernet Franc gives Le Clarence its charm, freshness, and early accessibility.
Color, aroma and taste of Le Clarence de Haut-Brion Rouge 2024
The wine has a vibrant garnet color. The bouquet is ethereal, pure, and alluring, with aromas of red fruit, violets, and delicate herbs. Cabernet Franc contributes floral freshness and elegance. On the palate, the wine begins powerfully and deeply. The structure is broad, with a velvety tannin and a layered complexity that will further develop with barrel aging. Le Clarence 2024 is like a restrained force: compact yet refined, with a promising future.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a very beautiful second wine. Dark and pliant, with terrific nuance, the 2024 is a delight. Cabernet Franc is quite high in this vintage. It’s a style that works so well. All the elements are impeccably balanced. Time in the glass brings out notable aromatic presence and body.

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935, the winery was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in the renovation of the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru, replacing the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.
The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
