The history of Château Ausone dates back to Roman times. The estate is named after Ausonius, a Roman poet and statesman who owned the property in the 4th century AD. Ausonius is known for his work "Mosella," a Latin poem describing the Moselle River and its surroundings. The property's association with this prominent figure contributes to its historical significance. The estate was cultivated throughout the Middle Ages, with various owners overseeing its development. During this period, viticultural and winemaking practices in the region evolved, paving the way for Bordeaux to become one of the world's most sought-after wine-producing regions.

Château Ausone's vineyards are located on the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, renowned for producing wines of exceptional finesse and aging potential. The estate's vineyard is relatively small but is planted with a mix of grape varieties. Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the primary grapes, with a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend, contributing to the unique character of Ausone's wines. The limestone soil and south-facing slopes of the vineyard play a crucial role in producing high-quality grapes. Château Ausone is known for its dedication to quality and meticulous vinification. The vineyards are meticulously maintained, and the grapes are hand-harvested to ensure the highest possible fruit quality. The winemaking process combines traditional and modern techniques. The wines are typically aged in new French oak barrels to enhance complexity and structure. Château Ausone produces only a limited amount of wine each year due to the small size of its vineyard. The Grand Vin, simply called Château Ausone, is considered one of the most exceptional and rare wines in Bordeaux. The estate also produces a second wine called Chapelle d'Ausone, which offers a more accessible and easy-drinking option.

Vineyard, location and climate of the 2024 harvest year

The Ausone vineyards are located on the southeastern slopes of Saint-Émilion and on the adjacent plateau. The subsoil consists of limestone and clay, which ensures natural drainage and mineral-rich wines. The 2024 growing season experienced a humid spring followed by a warm, dry summer. Thanks to the vines' deep rooting, stress was limited and the grapes were able to ripen optimally. The harvest took place between September 21st and October 3rd.

Blending, vinification and maturation of Chapelle d'Ausone 2024

The 2024 vintage is composed of 60% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were hand-harvested and rigorously selected. Vinification took place in thermoregulated concrete vats using natural yeasts. The wine was aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak. This method results in a wine that combines structure with finesse and excellent aging potential.

Color, aroma, and flavor profile of Chapelle d'Ausone 2024

The wine has a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. On the nose, it offers an elegant expression of floral aromas, fresh forest fruits, graphite, and subtle toast. On the palate, the structure is refined, with silky tannins, a core of ripe red and black fruit, and a mineral tension that gives the wine tension and freshness. The finish is long, layered, and very elegant.
