How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inThe White Stones Chardonnay comes from grapes grown in the renowned Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, where the soil is richly covered with stones and gravel with a high percentage of limestone, hence the name White Stones. The grapes are harvested at five different times, depending on the different ripeness levels of the grapes and thus varying levels of acidity, sugar, and aromas. The wine is fermented in used oak barrels and stainless steel for approximately 15 days. Malolactic fermentation does not take place, and the wine is aged on lees in stainless steel for 9-12 months before bottling. The result is a Chardonnay of outstanding quality. Extremely fresh with notes of white flowers, citrus, and beautiful aromas of chalk, limestone, and minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of freshness and vibrant acidity, finishing long and with a mineral feel. This is superb!
Bodega Catena Zapata is considered the flagship of Argentina's wineries. Robert Parker's statement is telling: "When all is said and done, Catena Zapata is the Argentina winery of reference, the standard of excellence."

As ever, the 2024 Adrianna Vineyard Chardonnay White Stones foregrounds a specific parcel in Lot 1 laden with alluvial gravels. It fermented in equal parts in concrete vats and 500-liter barrels of second-, third- and fourth-use, a portion of which was left to develop a layer of flor, although to a lesser degree than the White Bones bottling. It is pure and focused on the nose, with green fruits, citrus peels, dried flowers, iodine and resinous herbal aromas introducing a chiseled, tensile mouthfeel that is equal parts rich and weightless. Concluding with a racy, chalky and effortless finish, it is already drinking beautifully and should continue to do so through its 10th birthday.
The Catena family's contribution to Argentine wine over three generations, from the winery's founding in 1908, is the closest thing the country has to a single-producer narrative of national ascent. The portfolio ranges from entry-level bottlings distributed at scale to site-specific Catena Zapata parcela wines from individual plots in Gualtallary, Paraje Altamira, El Cepillo, Agrelo and Maipú—a stretch few estates anywhere span coherently. The work in the cellar is underwritten by the Catena Institute, the in-house research lab whose terroir analysis, viticultural mapping and clonal work represent a serious institutional commitment to understanding the myriad factors that shape how a wine tastes. The result is a producer that operates as both a global juggernaut and an avowed student of its own vineyards.
The undisputed centerpiece of these holdings is the Adrianna Vineyard, purchased by Nicolás Catena in 1992 and planted with Chardonnay in 1993—the start of what has gradually become a central element of Gualtallary, arguably Argentina's most important terroir. Within this single vineyard, the team identifies parcels distinguished by aspect, soil type and depth, producing the singular White Stones and White Bones Chardonnays, as well as the benchmark Malbec trifecta: the balanced and elegant Fortuna Terrae, the slender yet enveloping River and the multidimensional and commanding Mundus Bacillus Terrae. Across the estate's extensive holdings, the viticultural philosophy, overseen by Luis Reginato, applies uniform management to the varying soils and depths that define the range, accentuating their differences at harvest.
In the cellar, internationally celebrated technical director Alejandro Vigil oversees a winemaking style that pairs classically informed proportions with the cutting-edge energy and clarity that have come to define the best Argentine wines. Of his many achievements, arguably the most distinctive is his approach to Chardonnay, rooted in the classic "death and resurrection" principle of deliberately exposing the must to oxidation pre-fermentation, then marrying it with biological aging—a method now widely emulated across the country. White Bones is left to develop a deeper, more extensive flor, lending it a wild and even raucous bouquet, while White Stones ages under a lighter, shallower veil, yielding a more restrained exoticism. For the famous trilogy of Adrianna Vineyard Malbecs, macerations have generally lengthened, while extractions have grown gentler, with concrete vessels and whole-bunch retention playing an ever-increasing role in the blends, particularly in the top-of-the-range Mundus Bacillus Terrae.
The extensive roster centers overwhelmingly on Chardonnay, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Sémillon playing supporting roles in select bottlings, and since 2001, every wine labeled Catena or Catena Zapata has come from estate vineyards. The Catena Classic tier is designed for year-over-year consistency; the Catena Alta range is drawn from specific parcels within the family's holdings in Agrelo, Paraje Altamira, Gualtallary and Villa Bastías. The Appellation bottlings include a lovely range of white blends—White Clay, White Sands and White Volcanic—that recall earlier generations, when white wines accounted for a larger share of Catena's production. At the summit sit the Vino de Parcelas bottlings—now including the White Colluvium Chardonnay—alongside the Nicasia Vineyard, Malbec Argentino and Nicolas Catena Zapata blend.

A restrained wine with impressive minerals and intense, salty flavors of lemons, star fruit and green apples. Pure and stony, with electric acidity on the medium- to full-bodied palate, rounded by gastronomically intense flavors. Really long, linear and acid-driven in the pure, lightly saline finish. It’s edgy, austere and Chablis-like. Drink or hold.

From: The Path to Purity: New White Releases from Argentina (Jun 2026)
The 2024 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Stones, from Gualtallary and aged in used French oak, is alluring on the nose, with fresh pear and apple, lightly nutty tones, soft herbs and a hint of lime. The palate is striking for its intensity, driven by a chalky texture and a saline edge. What stands out is the clarity and depth of flavor, carried through a long, precise finish. As in the finest vintages, the White Stones is defined by transparency: a firm, finely structured palate with just enough flesh, expressed here in a particularly athletic form.

No producer has done more to define Argentine wine's global identity than Catena Zapata. In the 1980s, third-generation proprietor Nicolás Catena Zapata shifted the family's focus from mass-market production toward wines of the highest quality, establishing vineyards at elevated sites in search of cooler climates. That search led to the planting of La Pirámide in Agrelo, followed by Domingo and Adrianna in Tupungato and Nicasia in Paraje Altamira. Nicolás's daughter Laura Catena leads the operation today, overseeing a team that includes Alejandro Vigil at the winery and Fernando Buscema at the Catena Institute of Wine. Their approach is technically rigorous and site-specific, yielding such singular expressions as the White Bones and White Stones Chardonnays and the River, Fortuna Terrae and Mundus Bacillus Malbecs—wines that define what high-altitude viticulture can achieve.

Bodega Catena Zapata ranks among the absolute top of the Argentine wine world. This family estate from Mendoza, founded in 1902, sparked a revolution in South American viticulture. Through high-altitude pioneering and an uncompromising focus on quality, Catena Zapata not only put the Malbec grape on the map, but also helped establish Argentina’s reputation as a serious wine-producing nation. In this article, you’ll learn more about the impressive history, the iconic wines, and the innovative character of this leading winery.
Bodega Catena Zapata: Iconic Winery from Mendoza
Bodega Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s most influential wineries and plays a key role in shaping the global reputation of Argentine fine wine. The winery was founded in 1902 by Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant who sought his fortune in Mendoza. He planted his first vineyard with the Malbec grape, which was then still an unknown variety in Argentina.
His son, Domingo Catena, carried on his father’s dream and became one of Mendoza’s largest vineyard owners. However, the family business also faced adversity: in the 1960s, Argentina was hit by economic instability and sky-high inflation.
Nicolás Catena: The Man Who Reinvented Argentine Wine
The young Nicolás Catena, freshly graduated as an economist, took over the business in the mid-1960s. At a time when Argentina was mainly known for bulk wine production, Nicolás made the bold decision to focus on quality. Against all odds, he sold off the table wine-producing part of the family business and retained only Bodegas Esmeralda, the foundation for high-quality wines.
His vision was revolutionary: Argentina had to leverage the quality of its terroir to compete at the highest international level. He began replanting Malbec and Chardonnay at high altitudes, including in Gualtallary, a subregion in the Uco Valley located over 1,500 meters above sea level. While many believed Malbec would never ripen at that altitude, Catena proved otherwise.
Malbec as an Argentine Icon
The Malbec grape is now inseparably linked to Argentina — largely thanks to Nicolás Catena. In 1994, he released his first Catena Malbec, made from old vines in the Adrianna Vineyard. This vineyard turned out to be of exceptional quality and helped elevate the global reputation of Malbec.
Catena even planted 145 different Malbec clones and rigorously tested their suitability. Ultimately, he selected the best clones for his top-tier wines, including those from the La Pirámide vineyard.
Laura Catena: Science Meets Winemaking
In 2001, Nicolás handed over the R&D project to his daughter Laura Catena, a medical doctor with degrees from Harvard and Stanford. Her scientific background brought a new dimension to the winemaking process. Together with her team, she focused on the extreme microclimates of the high-altitude vineyards, which led to unique expressions of Malbec.
In 2004, the decision was made to ferment the grapes from these vineyards directly in new French oak barrels. This resulted in three groundbreaking Malbecs that today stand as symbols of the winery’s innovative power.
The Wines of Catena Zapata: Five Distinct Lines
The winery produces five wine lines, each with its own character and level of quality:
- Catena Zapata: The flagship cuvées, made only in exceptional vintages.
- Catena Alta: Wines from the best parcels of high-altitude vineyards.
- Catena: The core line, balancing elegance and typicity.
- Alamos: Accessible wines with excellent value for money.
- Argento: The most commercial line, aimed at a broader market (Note: this line was later spun off and is no longer directly part of Catena Zapata).
All of these wines come from vineyards located at 900 meters or higher, clearly emphasizing Catena Zapata’s commitment to terroir and elevation.
Innovation, Vision, and Terroir at Catena Zapata
Catena Zapata is a textbook example of how vision, perseverance, and innovation can lead to international acclaim. From the first Malbec plantings in 1902 to Laura Catena’s cutting-edge vinification methods, the winery continues to evolve without losing sight of its roots.
The iconic winery building, shaped like a Mayan pyramid and designed in the 1990s, symbolizes the connection between past and future. It serves as the physical and philosophical heart of the estate.
