Winery
Albamar is one of the most interesting producers in the Rías Baixas. The estate was founded by Xurxo Alba, who comes from a family of mussel farmers on the Atlantic coast of Galicia. This maritime influence plays a clear role in the style of his wines. Albamar works with small plots, old vines, and a natural approach in the vineyard. The focus is entirely on tension, freshness, and terroir. The wines are served in top restaurants worldwide due to their pure style and gastronomic versatility. You can find more information under the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The 2024 Finca O Pereiro Albariño comes from the Val do Salnés, the coolest and most classic part of Rías Baixas in northwestern Spain. The vineyard is situated close to the Atlantic Ocean, allowing the grapes to benefit from fresh sea breezes and large temperature differences between day and night. This results in lively acidity and a striking saline tension.
The soil consists primarily of granite and sand, typical of this region. Granite often gives Albariño a tight structure, a chalky minerality, and a pure citrus line. The combination of oceanic influence, humid air, and stony soils produces wines with great energy and finesse. Finca O Pereiro is a specific selection of plots with a distinct character of its own.
Grapes and vineyard management
This wine is made from 100% Albariño sourced from old vines deeply rooted in the poor granite soils. The low yields ensure greater concentration without the wine losing its fresh character. In the vineyards, interventions are deliberately kept to a minimum. Chemical pesticides are avoided as much as possible, and the focus is on healthy grapes with a natural balance.
Due to the humid climate in Galicia, meticulous vineyard management requires great attention. Good ventilation around the grape clusters is essential to keep the grapes healthy. The harvest is done by hand so that only perfectly ripe fruit reaches the cellar. You can taste this in the precision and purity of the wine.
Vinification and aging
After manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed to preserve the freshness and aromatic finesse of Albariño. Fermentation proceeds largely spontaneously with natural yeasts. As a result, the character of the plot remains clearly visible and the wine gains extra depth.
An important part of the aging process is sur lie maturation. The wine remains in contact with the fine yeast cells for several months, providing extra texture and subtle creaminess without losing its crisp profile. Aging takes place primarily in stainless steel so that fruit, minerality, and tension remain central. The result is an Albariño with precision, length, and remarkable detail.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a clear light yellow color with a subtle green nuance. The aroma opens refined and crisp with notes of lime, green apple, white peach, and lemon peel. These are followed by notes of wet stones, sea salt, fennel, and a light floral touch.
The taste is dry, energetic, and tightly structured. Ripe citrus and white fruit are supported by lively acidity and a pronounced mineral core. The sur lie aging adds extra tension and a slightly creamy texture that contrasts beautifully with the fresh style. In the long finish, saline notes and grapefruit return, along with a subtle spiciness.
This is a gastronomic Albariño that pairs excellently with oysters, shellfish, ceviche, grilled fish, and refined vegetable dishes. The wine's character also comes strongly to the fore with sushi or dishes featuring sea herbs.
Style and character
Finca O Pereiro reveals a more serious and terroir-driven side of Albariño. This is not an exuberantly aromatic wine, but one with structure, tension, and depth. The style is crisp, mineral, and gastronomic, with a strong emphasis on freshness and precision.
The combination of Atlantic influence, granite soils, and long sur lie aging gives the wine an almost saline character strongly reminiscent of high-quality white wines from cool coastal regions. At the same time, the wine retains sufficient fruit and accessibility to offer great drinking pleasure even when young.
Volume
The 2024 vintage in Rías Baixas was relatively cool and balanced, with sufficient moisture in the spring and a stable summer period leading up to the harvest. As a result, the grapes were able to ripen slowly and evenly, retaining fresh acidity and aromatic finesse.
For Albariño, this meant a vintage with great tension, pure fruit, and excellent balance. The 2024 Finca O Pereiro combines fresh citrus aromas with riper nuances of white fruit and a strikingly precise structure. The wine is already very attractive but also has sufficient substance to develop further in the coming years.

The nose of the 2024 Finca O Pereiro is flinty and smoky. This was produced with grapes from vines planted in 2004 in the Ría de Arousa on the clay-rich parts of the property, which is very close to the sea, some 200 meters away. The wine matured in a 5,000-liter oak foudre, and it has nuance, complexity and depth that show how the place is more important than vine age. It has good ripeness but keeps the tension, and it has great harmony and a tasty and salty finish. This is extremely young but already harmonious and with the stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle.
As I often explain, tasting the wide range from Xurxo Alba Padín is always like a fun rollercoaster ride; the wines have personality and are different. The range only seems to be getting wider and wider. He has 10 hectares of vines and buys some grapes, mostly from the village of Castrelo, and he produces 110,000 to 125,000 bottles, depending on the vintage.

This has a conservative nose of grapefruit and stones. It’s very tasty and minerally, with a thread of stone fruit and a structured profile. From a single vineyard planted on deep clay soil. This was fermented and aged in a 2,500-liter foudre. Drink or hold.
