Wijn uit de Verenigde Staten

Als je aan Amerikaanse wijn denkt, komt Californië vaak als eerste in beeld. Dat is logisch, want ruim 80% van alle wijn uit de Verenigde Staten komt daar vandaan. Toch zijn er veel meer wijngebieden die het ontdekken waard zijn. Denk aan Oregon, Washington State en zelfs New York. Elk gebied heeft zijn eigen stijl en karakter, gevormd door klimaat en druivenrassen.

Californië als wijnstaat

Californië is de motor van de Amerikaanse wijnproductie. Napa Valley en Sonoma zijn wereldwijd bekend. Napa staat vooral bekend om krachtige Cabernet Sauvignon en elegante Chardonnay. Sonoma biedt meer diversiteit, van Pinot Noir tot frisse Sauvignon Blanc. Het mediterrane klimaat met warme dagen en koele nachten is ideaal voor veel druiven. Hierdoor kunnen ze in balans rijpen en hun volle smaak ontwikkelen.

Oregon en Pinot Noir

Oregon heeft een koeler klimaat dan Californië en dat maakt de staat ideaal voor Pinot Noir. Vooral in de Willamette Valley worden wijnen gemaakt die vaak doen denken aan Bourgogne. Licht, elegant en met veel rood fruit. Naast Pinot Noir vind je er ook verrassend goede Chardonnay en Riesling. Oregon heeft zich de afgelopen decennia echt op de kaart gezet als serieuze wijnregio.

Washington State en diversiteit

Ten noorden van Oregon ligt Washington State. Deze staat is minder bekend, maar produceert uitstekende wijnen. De Columbia Valley is de belangrijkste appellatie. Hier vind je alles van Merlot en Cabernet Sauvignon tot Syrah en Chardonnay. Het klimaat is droog en zonnig, maar met koele nachten. Daardoor hebben de wijnen vaak veel concentratie, maar behouden ze frisheid.

Wijn uit New York

New York klinkt misschien niet meteen als wijnstaat, maar langs de Finger Lakes worden verrassend mooie wijnen gemaakt. Vooral Riesling doet het hier goed. Het koele klimaat en de diepe meren zorgen voor ideale omstandigheden. De wijnen zijn vaak fris, mineraal en aromatisch. Een heel ander profiel dan de rijke Californische wijnen.

Amerikaanse druivenrassen

De Verenigde Staten gebruiken zowel internationale als lokale druivenrassen. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot en Chardonnay spelen de hoofdrol. Pinot Noir en Zinfandel hebben ook een sterke positie. Daarnaast zijn er veel experimenten met minder bekende druiven. Dat maakt het Amerikaanse wijnlandschap veelzijdig en constant in beweging.

De veelzijdigheid van Amerikaanse wijn maakt ze goed inzetbaar aan tafel. Een Californische Chardonnay past prima bij vis of kip. What does a Pinot Noir taste like?

When Pinot Noir wines are consumed young, they typically exhibit aromas of strawberries, raspberries, and violets. When you let wines made from Pinot Noir grapes age, the aromas shift towards ripe strawberries and plums. Pinot Noirs often have an 'earthy' quality but are generally fairly light, delicate wines with low tannins. This makes Pinot Noir versatile and suitable for many occasions.
