Rich and structured Mercurey Chardonnay with ripe yellow fruit, chalk minerality, and refined oak influence.
Vincent & Jean-Pierre Charton Winery
Domaine Vincent & Jean-Pierre Charton is located in Mercurey and is known for its precise and terroir-driven style. The brothers work with attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar, striving for a pure expression of grape and origin. The wines combine structure, freshness, and balance, with a clear focus on length and refinement. More information about the winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
This wine comes from Mercurey in the Côte Chalonnaise, an appellation known for its serious and structured Burgundy style. Clos de la Chiquette is a specific vineyard within Mercurey with a distinct signature of its own.
The soil consists of hard limestone, which provides tension, minerality, and structure to the wine. This subsoil gives the wine a tight backbone and supports freshness, even in riper years.
The climate is continental with warm summers and cool nights. This ensures a good balance between ripeness and freshness. The 2023 vintage shows a beautiful combination of ripe fruit and sufficient acidity for structure.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The Clos de la Chiquette vineyard covers approximately 34 ares and is intensively managed with a high planting density of about 13,000 vines per hectare. This results in low yields and greater concentration in the grapes.
The average age of the vines is around 40 years. Old vines produce grapes with more complexity and depth, which is clearly reflected in the wine.
The wine is made from 100% Chardonnay and displays a classic Burgundy style, with an emphasis on the balance between fruit, structure, and terroir expression.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. After the harvest, a direct pressing follows with a short maceration on the skins to obtain extra structure and aromatic depth.
Fermentation and aging take place entirely in oak barrels. The wine ages in barrels for approximately 10 months, of which 25 to 30% is new wood. This ensures extra complexity and a refined integration of wood notes.
The combination of aging in wood and calcareous soils gives the wine both roundness and tension, with a clear structure and length.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright golden-yellow color. On the nose, aromas of ripe yellow fruit, such as peach and ripe apple, dominate, complemented by subtle notes of citrus and light oak influences.
On the palate, the wine is full and rich, with a soft and round start. The fruit is fleshy and concentrated, supported by good balance and fresh acidity. The oak influence is present but well integrated, adding extra structure.
The calcareous subsoil lends the wine a mineral tension that balances the richness. The finish is long, with a combination of ripe fruit, light spiciness, and a subtle toast note.
Development and drinking window
The 2023 Mercurey Clos de la Chiquette is already accessible but has sufficient structure to develop further. The drinking window is between now and approximately 6 to 8 years after the harvest. With some aging, the wine will develop additional complexity and reveal more integrated oak notes.
