Vincent & Jean-Pierre Charton Winery
Domaine Vincent & Jean-Pierre Charton is located in Mercurey and is known for its precise and terroir-driven approach. The brothers work with great care in the vineyard and opt for a classic style in the cellar with minimal intervention. Their wines combine structure, purity, and balance, with a clear focus on origin and grape. More information about the winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The Bourgogne Derrière Sazenay comes from a hilly vineyard in the Côte Chalonnaise, near Mercurey. This location ensures good drainage and optimal exposure to sunlight, which contributes to ripe and concentrated grapes.
The soil consists of slightly calcareous marl and hard limestone with cobblestones. This combination gives the wine structure, tension, and a distinct mineral undertone. The terroir contributes to a refined style with a balance between fruit and freshness.
The climate is continental, with warm summers and cool nights. As a result, the grapes retain their fresh acidity while simultaneously developing sufficient ripeness. The 2023 vintage shows a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and liveliness.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyard covers approximately 88 ares and is planted with a mass selection of Pinot Noir. This means working with genetically diverse plants, which ensures extra complexity in the wine.
The average age of the vines is approximately 60 years. Old vines yield lower harvests but produce grapes with more concentration and depth.
The yield is around 45 hectoliters per hectare, which contributes to a good balance between structure and finesse. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir and displays a classic Burgundy style with an emphasis on elegance and precision.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand and strictly selected to use only the best fruit. After the harvest, fermentation follows with a maceration of approximately 25 days, which ensures the extraction of color, aroma, and structure.
The wine subsequently ages for 12 months in oak barrels, approximately 15% of which are new. This provides a subtle oak influence and added complexity, without overpowering the fruit.
Aging in wood gives the wine a refined structure and helps soften the tannins, while preserving the fresh base.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright ruby red color. On the nose, aromas of black fruit such as blackberries and black cherries emerge, complemented by light spicy and earthy notes.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and smooth, with silky tannins and a fresh structure. The fruit is ripe and pure, with a beautiful balance between intensity and refinement.
The calcareous soils provide a subtle minerality that gives the wine extra tension. The finish is long and harmonious, with a combination of fruit, light spices, and a refined touch of oak.
Development and drinking window
The 2023 Bourgogne Derrière Sazenay is accessible in its youth thanks to the soft tannins, but has sufficient structure to develop further. The drinking window is between now and approximately 5 to 8 years after the harvest. With aging, the wine will show more complexity and depth.
