Description
A truly superb Riesling from 2023. And organic, too. Made by a top winery in the German wine region of Palatinate. This is the famous region with the most hours of sunshine in Germany. By German standards, it's quite warm there.
We're talking about Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz. Most of their vineyards are located along the Haardtrand, the area between the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine Bene. The vineyards are primarily on western slopes, but this particular Riesling comes from a southern slope: "im Sonnenschein."
The vineyard is located between 160 and 225 meters above sea level, with a slope of 5 to 20 percent. The soil there is called "Ganzhorn im Sonnenschein" and consists of colorful sandstone. Geologically, the soil is still quite young—about 1 million years old. The Queich River deposited gravel from the Palatinate Forest, along with sand, loam, and sandstone. And that's perfect soil for Riesling.
What makes this place so unique? The aroma is reminiscent of a hot summer day with the first raindrops just falling. The wine itself has a slightly salty acidity, is delightfully complex, and boasts tremendous length. The nose reveals elegant citrus notes. You'll also taste a powerful blend of mineral and spicy aromas, typical of this sandstone soil.
A complex, elegant Riesling with great depth. And thanks to the uncompromising winemaking method, it also boasts considerable aging potential. Certified organic, of course.

Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling Pfalz Ganz Horn GG 2023

2023
Intensely smoky with laser-beam straightness and abundant power, this youthful dry riesling GG needs plenty of aeration to gradually open up. Then you get notes of licorice and dried orange peel. Vibrates in an extraordinary way on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate, then builds to a monumental finish that is still really tight. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.
