Persoonlijke gegevens
Bodegas Juan Gil is one of the leading producers from Jumilla and is known for its modern approach and focus on quality. The family business has been working with grapes from its own vineyards for generations and has developed into a benchmark for characterful Spanish wines. In addition to the powerful Monastrell wines, the house also showcases a more playful and direct style with Ladera de las Bragas, in which fruit and drinkability take center stage. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
This wine comes from the Lagos de Arena region in Spain, where warm conditions and poor soils ensure ripe and concentrated fruit. The combination of sun and altitude helps maintain a good balance between ripeness and freshness. This results in wines that are intense in aroma yet remain lively on the palate.
Grapes and vineyard management
The 2023 Juan Gil Ladera de las Bragas Tinto is made from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring careful selection and preservation of quality. Tempranillo imparts a fruit-driven style here with soft tannins and an accessible structure.
Vinification and aging
Vinification takes place via carbonic maceration with whole clusters for approximately 15 days in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures below 27 degrees. This method ensures maximum fruit expression and a juicy character. No preservatives are added, and the wine is made without added sulfites.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep purple color. On the nose, it is immediately expressive with a blend of red and black fruit complemented by sweet spices and a light hint of cedarwood. On the palate, the wine is juicy and energetic with plenty of fruit and a smooth structure. The tannins are ripe and provide just enough grip. The finish is fresh, fruity, and persistent.
Style and character
This is a modern, fruit-driven red wine with a direct and accessible style. The carbonic maceration gives the wine its juicy character and makes it very drinkable. At the same time, the structure ensures that the wine certainly does not become too simple. It is a wine that revolves around fun, energy, and fruit.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio
Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.
