Bodegas Juan Gil is one of the most important producers in Jumilla and has been in the hands of the same family for four generations. The estate has developed into a benchmark for Monastrell from this part of Spain, with a clear focus on quality and terroir. The 110 Aniversario is a special cuvée created in honor of the house's anniversary, namely its 110th anniversary (1916-2026). This wine represents the best Juan Gil has to offer: concentration, depth, and a distinctive style. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Powerful and concentrated Monastrell with depth, structure, and a long, spicy finish.

Origin and terroir

The wine comes from Jumilla, a dry and warm region in southeastern Spain. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of approximately 700 meters and consist of poor, stony limestone soils. This combination of altitude and soil results in low yields and concentrated grapes, while freshness is preserved. The terroir is ideal for Monastrell and produces wines with power, but also balance and tension.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2023 Juan Gil 110 Aniversario is made from 100% Monastrell, sourced from organically farmed vineyards with very low yields of approximately 2,000 kilos per hectare. The vines are planted at high altitude and produce grapes with great concentration and aromatic depth. Due to the dry conditions and poor soils, yields remain low and quality high.

Vinification and aging

Vinification takes place in small stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Neutral yeasts are used to preserve the pure expression of Monastrell. The focus is on precision and balance, so that the character of the grape and the terroir comes clearly to the fore. The wine is then aged further to develop structure and complexity without losing the fruit.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a deep cherry-red color with ruby reflections. On the nose, aromas of dark fruit such as blueberries and cassis come to the fore, complemented by notes of cocoa, licorice, and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is rich and concentrated, with silky tannins and a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and fresh acidity. A slight bitterness adds extra structure. The finish is long and persistent, with balsamic and spicy notes that linger.

Style and character

This wine displays a powerful yet refined style. The combination of concentration, ripe tannins, and fresh acidity creates balance. It is a serious Monastrell with depth, but without becoming heavy. The wine combines intensity with elegance and clearly has aging potential.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio

Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.
