The history of Bodegas Juan Gil and the Jumilla region

Bodegas Juan Gil was founded in 1916 by Juan Gil Jiménez and has been in the hands of the Gil family ever since. Located in Jumilla, in the Murcia region of Spain, the winery has developed into a modern producer with respect for tradition. The vineyards are located on a plateau between the mountains, which provides a temperate climate compared to the valleys. This unique terroir contributes to the quality of the wines.

The climate and location of the vineyards

Juan Gil's vineyards are located at an altitude of between 700 and 850 meters above sea level. The climate in Jumilla is characterized by hot summers with temperatures above 40°C and cold winters, with a difference of 25°C between day and night. The soils are sandy and calcareous, poor in nutrients, which forces the vines to root deeply and contributes to the concentration and complexity of the grapes.

Grapes, harvest, fermentation and aging of the Juan Gil Petit Verdot

The Juan Gil Petit Verdot is a 100% Petit Verdot wine, coming from approximately 20-year-old vines growing on limestone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is aged for six months in used French and American oak barriques, which contributes to its complexity without overpowering the fruity characteristics.

Color, aroma and flavor profile of the wine

The Juan Gil is a new wine in the Juan Gil Series (Yellow, Silver, Blue and Blanco). This wine has a deep, dark purple color with ruby red highlights. In the nose, aromas of blackcurrants, cherries, herbs such as rosemary and a hint of bitter chocolate are noticeable. In the mouth, the wine is full and powerful, with notes of ripe black fruit, mocha and a subtle spiciness. The tannins are fine and well integrated, which ensures a long and pleasant aftertaste.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio

Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.

Organic/organic viticulture and sustainability are important elements in the vision of the Gil Family. Click here to see a nice video overview: Gil Family Estates - Video
