Joseph Colin Winery

Joseph Colin is the son of Marc Colin and the younger brother of Pierre-Yves Colin. After Pierre-Yves left in 2003 to start his now-famous PYC, Joseph took over Domaine Marc Colin with his two younger siblings, who had worked with his father since 1993. In 2017, Joseph followed in his older brother's footsteps, acquiring 6+ hectares of the original family estate and making his own wines there. The practice of gifting the eldest children some of the world's finest vines to help them forge their own paths in the wine world is a Burgundian tradition. In the Colin family's case, the parcels they received include some of the finest Chardonnay plots around St. Aubin, Puligny, and Chassagne. Joseph began working full-time with his father at such a young age and knows the vines in this white Burgundian mecca like no other, meticulously caring for each plot. Since its founding in 2017, it has focused entirely on terroir-driven white Burgundies with precision, tension, and minimal oak influence. The vinification focuses on purity and texture, with relatively short maturation and limited use of new oak to emphasize the provenance. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

2023 Joseph Colin Chassagne-Montrachet Hereditas

Hereditas is a cuvée that underscores Joseph Colin's family roots. Sourced from carefully selected plots in Chassagne-Montrachet, this wine showcases the classic balance of richness and freshness characteristic of the village, with a modern, refined interpretation.

Vineyards and vinification

The grapes are sourced from chalky soils around Chassagne-Montrachet. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, followed by maturation on the fine lees in oak barrels with a modest proportion of new wood. The goal is to maintain tension and precision, with sufficient texture to give the wine depth without masking the terroir.

The 2023 vintage

2023 brought healthy grapes and beautiful ripeness, combined with a fresh acidity. The result is a wine with convincing concentration yet vibrancy. Tastings highlighted the balance between floral refinement and fruit expression, with a seductive yet controlled style.

Color, smell and taste

Pale golden yellow in the glass. The nose reveals floral notes of apricot blossom and white orchard fruit, complemented by a subtle hint of melted candle wax. The aromatic precision is remarkably clear and defined.

Fresh and energetic on the palate, with remarkable concentration and weight for its level. Ripe peach and stone fruit emerge, supported by lively acidity and a fine mineral undertone. The finish is round and softly fruity, yet remains taut and balanced. A wine that already shows charm in its youth, yet has sufficient structure to develop further.

Structure and storage potential

The combination of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and subtle wood integration gives this Hereditas a cellaring potential until at least 2035. It is expected that with a few years of bottle aging, the wine will develop additional complexity and depth, without losing its lively character.

He has a hands-off approach in the cellar, ferments with native yeast and matures all wines in 350L barrels on their fine lees until bottled in line with the style of his brother Pierre Yves and of course his father Marc Coline and mother Carloine Morey. The wines are all prime examples of this most sacred of Chardonnay terroirs, with an excitement and verve that is so sought after but so rarely found.
