The story of inglenook

Inglenook is one of Napa Valley's most iconic estates. Founded in 1879 by the visionary Gustave Niebaum, who brought vines from Bordeaux to California, the estate enjoyed a golden age in the first half of the 20th century and was later revived by Francis Ford Coppola, who restored the estate to its former glory. The Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to John Daniel Jr., the winemaker behind the legendary 1941 Inglenook Cabernet, one of the most celebrated wines in Napa Valley history.

the terroir of Rutherford

The vineyards for this Cabernet Sauvignon are spread across the estate in Rutherford, including the Niebaum Lane, Chateau, Creek North, and Garden blocks. Rutherford is famous for its "Rutherford dust," a term that refers to the fine, dusty tannins that give wines from this region their distinctive character. The soils consist of alluvial deposits with gravel and clay, which ensures optimal drainage and rich complexity. The Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool nights, contributes to the ripeness and aromatic intensity of the grapes.

the grapes and the 2022 harvest

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot. The growing season began with beneficial rainfall in the fall of 2021, but ultimately proved drier than expected. Thanks to the stored nutrients and healthy canopies, the grapes were able to ripen fully and evenly. Harvest began on September 1st with the blocks surrounding the Chateau and concluded in late September with the Red Barn plots. The result is a vintage that combines power with finesse and balance.

vinification and maturation

After being harvested by hand, the grapes were carefully selected and fermented in small batches. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 48% new and 52% neutral. This aging strengthens the structure and imparts subtle notes of vanilla and spice, while preserving the fruity character. The wine was bottled in July 2024, ready to mature into a classic example of Rutherford Cabernet.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of black currant, forest fruits, and a hint of vanilla and baking spice. On the palate, it reveals layers of black cherry and red fruit, complemented by cedar and subtle earthy notes. The mouthfeel is medium to full, with firm yet polished tannins and a silky texture. The Wine Advocate noted that this wine is more powerful and muscular than the 2022 Rubicon, with more tannin and extraction, but without coarseness. The finish is long and lively, carried by fresh acidity.

reviews and storage potential

The Wine Advocate awarded the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon 94 points. Critic Joe Czerwinski praised the wine for its dark fruit expression, muscular style, and refined tannin structure. Its aging potential is between 2026 and 2045, making it suitable for both young and long-term enjoyment. Compared to Rubicon, this cuvée offers more power and concentration, while Rubicon is known for its extreme refinement and elegance.
