Weingut Günter Steinmetz, one of the most renowned Mosel producers, is located in the heart of the German Mosel region and has been making wines based on terroir for generations. It is a family business, led by Stefan Steimetz (5th generation) and his wife Sammie since 1999. Stefan Steinmetz is known for producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of his historic vineyards and is one of the icons of the Mosel region, which is also supported by (very) high ratings of his wines by the international wine press.

The 2021 Wintricher Geierslay Riesling "GW" is bright and intense as well as complex and pure on the precise and citric nose. From blue-purple colored slate and quartzite soils, this is a round and elegant, pretty charming and yeasty-textured old-vines Riesling that fermented slowly, with the malolactic fermentation included. The finish reveals serious phenolic grip and bitterness; its character is quite rich and powerful without being fat or boring. I would cellar it for another 4 or 5 years due to its intensity and phenolics. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

The 2023 Riesling Piesporter Treppchen Kabinett comes from almost 60-year-old vines. The nose is subtle, but the concentration is immense. The palate offers herbal tisane, soothing and cooling, brimming with aroma. Lemony tanginess edges the flavors, complemented by subtle sweetness. What a stunning and faceted collection. Wilhelm Steinmetz founded this Brauneberg-based estate in the 1920s. Today, Stefan Steinmetz and his American wife, Sammie, run the operation. Their 13 hectares of vines span steep sites like Brauneberger Juffer, Kestener Paulinshofberg, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Treppchen, Grafenberg and Domherr, Mülheimer Sonnenlay, Veldenzer Grafschafter Sonnenberg, Neumagener Rosengärtchen, Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay, Wintricher Geierslay and Oligsberg, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Dhroner Hofberg and the monopole of Dhroner Grosser Hengelberg (where he crafts a vivid, clear-cut style of very fine-boned Riesling). Steinmetz sets store by reduced yields and absolute delineation of his sites. All the dry Rieslings go through malolactic conversion, yet their clarity and freshness would never make you guess that.
