Description
Emilio Moro Winery
Emilio Moro is a leading family winery in Ribera del Duero, specializing in Tempranillo from old vines. For generations, the estate has cultivated its own vineyards around Pesquera de Duero and is known for wines with concentration, ripe fruit, and a distinctive style. Innovation and precision in the cellar go hand in hand with respect for tradition and terroir.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Ribera del Duero, a high-altitude wine region with a distinctly continental climate. Significant temperature variations between day and night contribute to aromatic intensity and acidity retention. The 2023 vintage experienced warm spells, but also plenty of cool weather, resulting in ripe fruit that retains its freshness and structure.
Vineyards
Malleolus comes from select plots of old Tempranillo vines, planted on calcareous soils with clay and gravel. The low yields and age of the vines contribute to concentration and depth. These vineyards form the core of the Malleolus style within Emilio Moro's range. This iconic wine has played a significant role in the winery's history and marked a turning point in its development. "Malleolus," which means "vineyard" in Latin, pays tribute to the old vines of Pesquera de Duero. The wine is known for its elegance, distinct character, and perfect balance between ripeness and freshness—a direct result of the stony soils in this region.
Grape varieties and composition
The wine is made from 100 percent Tempranillo, also known locally as Tinto Fino. The focus is on a pure expression of the grape and plot, without blending with other varieties.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Vinification focuses on extraction that matches the ripeness of the fruit, while maintaining balance and freshness. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, where the use of wood enhances structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color. The nose is intense and ripe, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by notes of cocoa, spice, and a subtle earthy undertone. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated dark fruit and distinct yet ripe tannins. The acidity adds tension and balance to the rich structure. The finish is long and layered, with a combination of fruit, spice, and oak.

The 2017 Malleolus is also pure Tempranillo, in this case from small parcels (in Spanish "majuelo" and in Latin "malleolus") of vines aged between 25 and 75 years of age. Yields were reduced by 50% in 2017, so it's a very unusual vintage. It matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. As I found with the rest of 2017s, this is very expressive, aromatic and fresh, floral, aromatic, happy and expressive, without excess ripening and with fruit in the foreground and the oak neatly folded into the fruit. It's juicy, medium to full-bodied, perhaps not as concentrated as others, but balanced, with fine-grained tannins; it's very pleasant and representative of the grape and zone. Very good for the conditions of the year. 180,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.
Against all odds, the 2017s from Emilio Moro showed quite well, despite the superiority of 2016 in complexity and depth. The top range for sale now is from the 2015 vintage, and the wines behaved quite well for a warm and dry year. They are some of the icons of modern Ribera del Duero, and following the line of the previous years, the oak feels better and better integrated, of course within their powerful and generously oaked style.

From: Duero: From Ribera to Toro via Rueda (And a Few Other Detours) (Jun 2025)
From the stony soils of Ribera del Duero, the 2022 Malleolus delivers a ripe profile shaped by both site selection and a warm year. Aromas of blackberry, anise and oak mingle with a hint of cedar and layers of herbs. The palate is broad and slightly indulgent, with grippy tannins that feel a bit rigid on the gums but do not break the enveloping flow. Intensity of flavor and grip drive the finish. A well-made, rich interpretation of Ribera.

The family business Emilio Moro has been located in Pesquera del Duero since 1892. This bodega boasts a three-generation tradition and includes vineyards over 90 years old. Due to their long history, they have been able to expand their vineyards very specifically with mostly Tinto Fino. The Finca Resalso and Crianza excel in purity, elegance and complexity. The top cuvées are of rare class; the very old vines of these two 'Pagos' give an extremely low yield resulting in very complex wines with a great depth and temperament.
In 1987 Emilio Moro first launched his own wines under his own label. With about 200 hectares of vineyards and a total annual production of 1.5 million bottles, it is a modern and large company. Thanks to its high quality standards and innovative management, it is also one of the leading wine companies. This applies not only in Spain but money worldwide and this is also confirmed that it has been nominated by Wine Enthusiast as Best Winery of the World. Emilio Moro's focus on Research, Development and Innovation is impressive and the enormous focus on quality is certainly an important factor in the high quality of all wines, but let's not forget that the old Emilio Moro vineyards are located in the most beautiful part of the Ribera del Duero with a completely unique and extremely suitable terroir located at a great height. In 2017, Wine Spectator placed the Emilio Moro in 59th place in the Prestigious Top 100 of the world's best wines.
In 2008, Emilio Moro died at the age of 75. In the same year, the Emilio Moro foundation was established, which is committed to providing poor regions of the world with clean drinking water and improving living conditions. Javier & José Moro are now in charge.
The emilio moro portfolio consists of 5 red wines, all of which are made from the regional variant of the Tempranillo (tinto fino). The special thing is that a very old pure clone is used. The vineyards range from 30-90 years old, but even the younger vineyards are from the lots of this unique clone. Emilio moro does not use the terms Crianza or Reserva and the name of the wine stands for the character of the wine.
