Description
The 2023 Wachenheimer Riesling from Dr. Bürklin-Wolf demonstrates why this estate is among Germany's absolute top wines. This village wine is delicate, vibrant, and boasts impressive balance between ripe fruit and salty freshness. A Riesling with class, precision, and a remarkably long finish – already delicious, yet with remarkable aging potential.
2023 vintage: lively tension and natural balance
The 2023 growing season in Mittelhaardt was initially uneventful, without frost or extreme conditions. A dry summer was followed by rain in August, which temporarily delayed ripening but preserved the fruit's freshness. Careful hand-picking at harvest yielded exceptionally pure grapes. The result: Rieslings that are lively, juicy, and mineral, with healthy acidity and remarkable aromatic tension – precisely what makes this wine so refined.
Origin & terroir
The vineyards around Wachenheim are characterized by Buntsandstein (red sandstone), loess, and limestone. This combination creates a refined structure and subtle salinity. The cool evening temperatures preserve the acidity, while the sun-drenched Palatinate during the day brings out the ripe fruit with elegance. The wine perfectly reflects this interplay of warmth and freshness.
Vinification & style
- Cultivation: completely biodynamic, Demeter certified.
- Fermentation: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in stainless steel and traditional oak Fuder barrels.
- Maturation: several months on the fine lees for roundness and depth.
- Style: Dry, mineral and complex, with a round texture and intense aromatic profile.
Tasting note
The aroma reveals notes of green apple, gooseberry, lemon peel, and white peach , complemented by subtle spiciness and a cool, salty minerality. The palate is precise and elegant: pure, lively, and layered, with a delicate structure and refreshing grip. A wine that combines energy and finesse, with a long, slightly salty finish that beckons you to the next sip.
Storage potential & serving tips
- Drinking window: already attractive, but will continue to develop until 2050.
- Serving temperature: 8–10 °C.
- Glassware: Medium Riesling or universal wine glass for maximum expression.
- Storage advice: Store in a cool, dark, and stable place; the wine develops more depth and complexity with age.
Wine and food pairings
- Seafood: oysters, scallops, or lime ceviche.
- Asian cuisine: light curries, sashimi or Thai glass noodle salad.
- Vegetables & salads: asparagus, artichoke, or fresh salad with citrus vinaigrette.
- Cheeses: young goat's cheese or soft cream cheeses.

The 2023 Wachenheim Village Riesling trocken is clear, light, pure and fresh on the bright and fragrant, almost a little greenish nose that offers green apple, gooseberry and lemon rind but also white peach aromas intertwined with coolish and slightly saline terroir notes. Not extraordinarily ripe but elegant, saline and with sur lie complexity, it is round and elegant on the palate. This is a full-bodied yet pure and filigreed, savory, persistently intense and structured Riesling with serious grip and tension. It is very long and intense and very promising, 12% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025.
The 2023 vintage got off to a relaxed start in the Mittelhaardt, with no frost or other adversity. But then water became scarce over the summer; however, the previous winter had stored good amounts of water in the soil, so the plants and fruit remained healthy. Nevertheless, after a long period of drought, rain was longed for in August, and it actually came, and in abundance. As a precaution, the harvest team was placed on call, in order to be able to react quickly if necessary. The rain in August caused individual berries to rot, but since they were easily visible, they posed no problem and were sorted out before the main harvest.
Yet the heavy rainfall delayed the ripening process, and so the desired ripeness had not yet been achieved by the beginning of September. Botrytis was spreading, however. This required a considerable amount of selection work, which significantly slowed down the pace of the harvest compared to previous years, despite the good size of the team. Then it finally dried up, and the botrytis did not develop any further, which helped to ease the tension and turned the team's previous frustration at the slow progress into cheerfulness. The result is animatingly juicy Rieslings with good pH values, which give the aromatic wines stimulating acidity. They taste excellent, even in their youth, but at the same time they also have good aging potential.
In Wachenheim, a single Auslese could be harvested, but otherwise the focus at Bürklin is on the production of great, dry Palatinate Rieslings from biodynamic production. As always, the Kirchenstück is the most impressive wine of the 2023 series, followed by Pechstein and Gaisböhl. The Gerümpel premier cru is beautiful and on the level of the grands crus this year such as Langenmorgen, Hohenmorgen and Ungeheuer. Bürklin-Wolf also remains a superb producer of Village wines, which are on the level of many Pfalz crus and deliver impressive complexity, class and tension in this price range.

Bürklin-Wolf owns vineyards in the most renowned “Lagen” of the Mittelhaardt. The estate has plots in several Lagen (vineyards) located in Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg, and Wachenheim. For the classification of its dry Riesling wines, Bürklin-Wolf uses the Burgundian model of the quality pyramid.
This system takes terroir, yield, and grape ripeness into account, using Grand Cru (GC) and Premier Cru classifications. Bürklin-Wolf is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter) but does not use the term Grosses Gewächs.
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf: Iconic Rieslings from the Pfalz
The story of Dr. Bürklin-Wolf began in 1597 and has since been closely intertwined with the history of German winemaking. The estate is still family-owned and today ranks among the very best in Germany. With 86 hectares of vineyards, it is one of the largest privately owned wine estates in the country. Since 1992, the winery has been led by Christian von Guradze and his wife Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, heir to the family estate. Under their guidance, the winery has undergone an impressive quality evolution, notably as one of the first German producers to fully embrace biodynamic viticulture.
While the estate was once best known for its Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslesen, the focus has shifted to top-level dry white wines, vinified almost exclusively from Riesling.
