Domaine Vrignaud Winery

Domaine Vrignaud is a traditional family-run winery in Chablis that has been active in the region for several generations. The estate owns vineyards in some of Chablis's most renowned terroirs and cultivates with great respect for the character of the chalky soils. The focus is on pure, terroir-driven Chardonnay, where freshness, minerality, and precision are paramount. Through careful vineyard work and relatively restrained vinification, Domaine Vrignaud produces wines that perfectly reflect the classic character of Chablis.

2023 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume

Fourchaume is one of Chablis's most famous Premier Cru vineyards, located on the right bank of the Serein River, just north of the village of Chablis. The vineyard benefits from excellent south- and southwest-facing exposure and characteristic Kimmeridgian soils, rich in limestone and fossil shells. This combination produces Chablis with both power and minerality.

Terroir and vinification

The Chardonnay grapes grow on the chalky clay and marl soils typical of Chablis. These soils give the wine its characteristic minerality and fresh structure. After harvest, the grapes are carefully pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures. Maturation takes place largely in stainless steel tanks, occasionally supplemented with a small amount of oak, to preserve the pure expression of the terroir.

Color, smell and taste

A bright, pale yellow color with green highlights. The nose offers fresh aromas of citrus, green apple, and white flowers, complemented by subtle notes of peach and wet stone. As the wine opens, a light minerality and a hint of chalk emerge.

On the palate, it's taut and refined, with lively acidity that gives the wine tension. The fruit is fresh and pure, with notes of lemon, apple, and light stone fruit. The typical Chablis minerality ensures a long, refreshing finish with a salty note.

Fourchaume's style

Chablis from Fourchaume is known for its combination of power and elegance. The wines typically have a little more roundness and structure than many other Premier Cru vineyards, while retaining Chablis's characteristic minerality. This makes them suitable for both gastronomic enjoyment and further aging in the bottle.

Serveer licht gekoeld en laat een scheutje limoensap of een beetje botersaus bij vis erbij aansluiten; extra warmte uit een beetje geroosterde amandel of hazelnoot in de bereiding geeft een mooie loop in de mond.

The Vrignaud family have been winegrowers in the village of Fontenay-prés-Chablis for 5 generations. A typical Chablis village that was already founded in 1130 by the Templars and their 12th century church is the oldest in the region. The domain of the Vrignaud family is 19ha and is located in the middle of the best vineyards of Fourchaume. The domain includes 10ha of vineyards in the Chablis, the northernmost appellation of Burgundy. The wines are made from chardonnay like most white wines in Burgundy. The vineyards are cultivated using the organic method, for example no weed killers or pesticides are used routinely in the vineyard. Their oldest vineyards, which are still in use today, date back to 1955 and are used to make the Chablis 1er Cru “Fourchaume” Vieilles Vignes.
