Winery
Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils is one of the most respected family businesses of the Côte de Nuits. From Vosne-Romanée, the family carefully manages an impressive estate of vineyards in some of Burgundy's most prestigious appellations. The philosophy is simple: low yields, manual harvesting, and minimal intervention in the cellar so that each climat retains its own character. The wines combine classic Burgundian finesse with excellent concentration and are among the most reliable representatives of their origin. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
Champerrier Vieilles Vignes comes from old Pinot Noir vines in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of the most famous villages of the Côte de Nuits. The calcareous clay soils provide structure and refinement, while excellent drainage allows the vines to root deeply. Thanks to the combination of old vines, a favorable location, and the cool Burgundian climate, the grapes develop great aromatic complexity without losing their fresh character. The result is a Gevrey-Chambertin with great depth and a distinct mineral signature.
Grapes and vineyard management
The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from old vines, a large proportion of which are decades old. Due to naturally low yields, these vines produce grapes with high concentration and great aromatic intensity. All grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before being processed in the cellar. Respect for the terroir and a meticulous vineyard approach are central to every harvest.
Vinification and aging
After careful selection, the grapes ferment under controlled conditions to optimally preserve the purity of the fruit. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately sixteen to eighteen months in French oak barriques, only a limited proportion of which are new. This ensures that the character of the old vines and the terroir is fully preserved. During aging, sur lie maturation contributes to extra texture, refinement, and complexity.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright ruby red color. On the nose, it initially presents itself restrained with aromas of cranberry, redcurrant, and ripe cherries, followed by forest floor, black pepper, orange peel, and subtle spicy notes. As the wine opens up, mineral nuances appear along with a light iron touch typical of this vineyard. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a refined structure, lively acidity, and fine, ripe tannins. The finish is long, elegant, and harmonious, where red fruit, spices, and minerality come together beautifully.
Style and character
Champerrier Vieilles Vignes combines the classic power of Gevrey-Chambertin with striking elegance. The old vines provide concentration and depth, while the fresh acidity and mineral tension keep the wine light-footed. In its youth, the wine is still somewhat reserved, but with a few years of bottle aging, it will develop more aromatic complexity and refinement.
Volume
The 2023 vintage in the Côte de Nuits produced wines of great aromatic intensity, ripe fruit, and excellent balance. This Gevrey-Chambertin already displays great precision but will develop further in the coming years. The alcohol content is expected to be approximately 13.5%. The drinking window runs from 2027 to 2040.
Food and wine pairings
This Gevrey-Chambertin pairs excellently with duck breast, guinea fowl, veal, roe deer, venison, and dishes with mushrooms or truffles. Grilled tuna, game birds, and aged hard cheeses also make excellent combinations. Serve the wine at around 16°C and preferably allow it an hour to fully open up.

From: The Lord Giveth…Burgundy 2023 (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes was less expressive on the nose than some of Tardy's other cuvées. It's a bit bashful and earthier at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with cranberry, redcurrant, black pepper and orange rind on the entry. It has decent weight, cohering toward the finish with a Morey-like, slightly ferrous aftertaste. This will be fascinating to revisit in bottle.
