Winery
Domaine Anne Gros belongs to the absolute elite of the Côte de Nuits. Since Anne Gros took over the family estate in the late 1980s, it has grown into one of the most respected producers in Burgundy. Her style is characterized by precision, pure fruit, and an exceptional sense of balance, with the origin always at the forefront. The vineyards are managed with great care, and the vinification is aimed at allowing each climat to speak as purely as possible. The Richebourg Grand Cru is one of the estate's most exclusive and sought-after wines and is produced in very limited quantities. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
Richebourg Grand Cru is situated directly above Romanée-Saint-Vivant in Vosne-Romanée and is considered one of the most famous Grand Crus of Burgundy. The calcareous clay soil, excellent drainage, and ideal exposure produce Pinot Noir with a unique combination of power, refinement, and minerality. The old vines root deep in the limestone soil and produce grapes of immense concentration and aromatic complexity. This exceptional terroir yields wines that can age for decades.
Grapes and vineyard management
The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from carefully maintained plots within the Richebourg Grand Cru vineyard. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and rigorously selected before reaching the cellar. Low yields and sustainable vineyard practices ensure grapes with an optimal balance of ripeness, freshness, and terroir expression. Only the best fruit is used for this iconic cuvée.
Vinification and aging
After careful selection, the grapes ferment naturally, with maximum attention paid to preserving the purity of the fruit. Aging takes place in French oak barriques, some of which are new, for approximately sixteen to eighteen months. This maturation supports the structure without overpowering the character of the vineyard. During aging, sur lie maturation contributes to added complexity, texture, and length, allowing the wine to develop its characteristic depth.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep ruby red color with brilliant clarity. The aroma opens subtly with blackberries, wild berries, and blackberry bush, followed by tobacco, violets, spices, and subtle earthy notes. As the wine develops, aromas of tart cherries, black tea, sea minerals, and fine herbs emerge. On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be powerful yet extremely refined. The structure is supported by silky tannins, lively acidity, and a striking mineral tension. The long finish is linear, precise, and particularly elegant, with notes of red and black fruit, pepper, and a briny minerality.
Style and character
This Richebourg combines the natural power of the Grand Cru with the refined signature of Anne Gros. The wine possesses great concentration but never appears heavy. On the contrary, finesse, precision, and balance predominate. In its youth, the wine is still closed and tightly structured, but with bottle aging, it will develop into an exceptionally complex Burgundy in which fruit, minerality, and spiciness blend completely.
Volume
The 2023 vintage in the Côte de Nuits produced wines of great aromatic intensity, excellent freshness, and a fine balance. For Richebourg, this resulted in a wine with great tension, refinement, and impressive aging potential. The alcohol content is expected to be approximately 13.5%. The drinking window runs from 2028 to 2052, during which the wine will continue to develop over several decades.
Food and wine pairings
This Grand Cru deserves refined dishes such as pigeon, roe deer, venison, veal fillet, Bresse chicken with morels, or duck breast. Dishes with black truffle, mushrooms, and subtle sauces also pair beautifully with the wine's elegant structure. Preferably serve lightly chilled at around 16°C and allow the wine ample time to open up in the glass.

From: The Lord Giveth…Burgundy 2023 (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru has a surprisingly understated bouquet that is shaded by the preceding Clos de Vougeot. Blackberry, briar and light tobacco scents emerge, though it remains a little reticent in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, quite peppery in style, with hints of sour cherry and sea salt toward a finish that feels quite linear and strict at the moment. Very fine, but it will require time.
