Description
EN PRIMEUR DISCOUNT VALID UNTIL 1/12/2025 - DELIVERY SPRING 2026
The former owner and namesake Louis Gaspard d'Estournel was known as the Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe. He decorated the castle in Indian style, threw large parties and lived beyond his means. In 1852 he was completely destitute and had to sell his domain. He died a year later. Cos d'Estournel is perhaps the Chateau with the most new and advanced wine making technique. From picking to maturing of the bottles, everything is carefully checked and carried out with the greatest care. In this way, they have managed to create a vinification process in which the wine is transported without pumps. All actions are performed by gravity. In 1855 the Chateau obtained the 2nd Grand Cru Classé status
Tasting notes for Pagodes de Cos 2023
The 2023 Pagodes de Cos has a fruity character with notes of red fruit, a perfect balance, a salty freshness and an aftertaste with persistent spicy notes. This vintage is harmonious with aromas of red berries that form a nice balance against the typical saltiness of the terroir and the fresh, spicy aftertaste that provides great length.
The Pagodes de Cos 2023 comes from the Saint-Estèphe appellation, one of the most prestigious wine regions in the Médoc region.
The blend consists of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
The Terroir of Cos d'Estournel
The vineyards of Pagodes de Cos are located on a dedicated terroir with vines that are on average 40 years old. The 2023 vintage is lush and harmonious, with aromas of red berries that beautifully balance the saltiness characteristic of this terroir and the freshness of a finely ground, spicy finish that emphasizes the length of this vintage.
Located in the north of the Médoc, on the hill of Saint-Estèphe, Château Cos d'Estournel appears majestically. The castle and pagodas surprise and captivate the eye like a real palace of a Maharaja. In 1791, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel inherited hectares of vineyards and built the estate. As an adventurer who had traveled the world, his taste for the exotic and the Orient gave Château Cos d'Estournel its unique architecture in the Médoc. Owned by Michel Reybier since 2000, it continues to shine in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the tradition of the greatest wines in the world, characterized by a unique style where the taste for beauty and excellence is a constant search.
The Vineyard
Château Cos d'Estournel enjoys an exceptional geographical location. The vineyard is located on the edge of a plateau, in the immediate vicinity of the Gironde estuary. This allows the vineyard to benefit from a maritime climate while being protected from bad weather. The vines are planted on two slopes and a central plateau, benefiting from ideal exposure and good ventilation. Since 1994, Pagodes de Cos has been produced from a dedicated vineyard whose vines are on average 40 years old. It is the second wine from Château Cos d'Estournel.

2019 Bordeaux Primeurs Flash Review 1, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Les Pagodes de Cos (14.03% alcohol) is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aging in 20% new barriques. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, notions of wild blueberries, boysenberries and redcurrant jelly come bounding out of the glass, followed by a profound core of warm cassis, licorice and bouquet garni with a touch of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate bursts with bright, expressive black and red fruit flavors, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing on a lingering spicy note.

2027 - 2043
The 2023 Les Pagodes de Cos makes a strong statement out of the gate. A blast of intense dark fruit, leather, spice, menthol, game, licorice, dried herbs and chocolate infuses the palate with remarkable textural intensity. Ample and resonant in the glass, with fabulous balance, Les Pagodes is exceptionally fine in 2023. The long, sustained finish is a thing of beauty.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2024
I was deeply impressed with the 2023s at Cos d’Estournel. “We did a green harvest for the first time since 2008, Technical Director Dominique Arangoïts explained. “There was no real heat until mid-August. Then we got one spike from August 17 to 24 and another from September 3 to 10. Yields were 47 hectoliters per hectare, a significant jump from 2022 when they were just 33 and probably too low. Berry size was normal, but there were a lot more berries and more seeds within those berries, so we opted for longer macerations at lower temperatures.” Proprietor Michel Reybier has numerous business interests to look after, but he is ever-present at Cos d’Estournel, and that attention shows.
