Description
Cloudy Bay is New Zealand's benchmark wine brand and the most internationally acclaimed. It is one of the first five wineries in Marlborough, New Zealand's premier wine region (located at the northernmost tip of the South Island). It takes its name from the Cloudy Bay to the east, discovered by Captain Cook. As a pioneer, Cloudy Bay definitively put the Marlborough wine region on the map. Marlborough's cool, maritime climate is interspersed with abundant sunshine. Long sunny days and cool nights create beautiful aromas and powerful flavors.
The emperor or empress among Cloudy Bay wines is Te Koko. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes come from a very old vineyard. As with very old vineyards, yields are often very low, but the quality is extremely good. For this reason, very old vineyards are often replaced by young vines that yield higher yields, but fortunately not with these vineyards located in Rapaura, Brancott, and Renwick, because these are the high-quality grapes from which this Te Koko is produced. The grapes for this wine come from four Cloudy Bay vineyards and are harvested at night for optimal fruit intensity. In addition, this Te Koko has undergone a long oak aging of 12 months, resulting in a full-bodied, thick, and somewhat oily wine with wonderful acidity, lovely (citrus) fruit, jasmine flowers, sweet spices, and hints of ginger. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, creamy on the palate, and the finish is very subtle but present with smoky oak and a touch of vanilla.

Te Koko is arguably the wine that launched the concept of premium Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand in the 1980s—no mean feat. On the nose, this 2021 Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc leads with pink grapefruit, nashi pear, white pepper, layers of crushed shells and brine, with hints of vanilla pod and star anise. In the mouth, all of the above with additional cut fennel, suggestions of marzipan, graphite and white pepper. There is a gentle lees texture and brilliant length of flavor. Excellent wine. The only reason you could possibly not like this wine is if you don't like Sauvignon Blanc, and even then, I'd insist that you try it. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

A crisp and pristine style, not without minerality. Lemon pith on the nose with a touch of asparagus as well as cedar, oranges, Mirabelle plums and a core of passion fruit. Dried-pineapple depth. Medium-bodied and bone-dry on the palate, this has zesty integrated acidity, weight and length with a chalky, citrusy, superfresh finish. Drink now.
