Description
Winery Château Siran
Château Siran is a historic family estate in Margaux, known for its consistent style and strong identity. The estate combines classic Médoc traditions with modern precision in vineyard and cellar. The focus is on balance, freshness, and terroir expression, with wines that are both accessible in their youth and can age well. Siran is one of the appellation's hallmarks.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Château Siran's vineyards are located in Margaux, on gravelly soils with underlying clay. This combination creates aromatic finesse and a refined tannic structure. The 2023 vintage had a relatively even growing season. The grapes ripened without excessive stress, resulting in wines with freshness, precision, and an elegant structure.
Vineyards
The plots are carefully monitored and harvested separately. The diversity of soils within the estate contributes to complexity and nuance. In 2023, harvesting took place between September 11th and 29th, focusing on ripe fruit and maintaining tension.
Grape varieties and composition
The blend consists primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, supplemented with smaller portions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and freshness, while Merlot adds roundness and texture. The smaller components add spice and refinement.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes were carefully selected and vinified classically. Extraction was controlled to preserve the fruit's purity and fine tannins. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, with new wood used as a support, focusing on the balance between fruit and structure.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals aromas of dark berries, complemented by graphite, light tarry notes, and subtle woody influences. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with lively acidity and a precise structure. The fruit is juicy and crisp, with fine, well-integrated tannins. The texture remains mineral and refined, with an elegant and fresh finish that becomes increasingly nuanced with aeration.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate described the Margaux as compact, youthful, and structured. James Suckling rated the wine 94-95, praising its bright fruit expression, fresh acidity, and refined tannins. Neal Martin of Vinous awarded it 92-94, emphasizing its mineral precision, elegance, and potential to develop positively with age.

Wow. This is really well done with plenty of al-dente fruit character, bright acidity and firm, fine tannins that are already well integrated. Medium-bodied. Crunchy.

From: The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Siran, picked September 11 to 29, has a well-defined bouquet that is not as complex as the previous vintage. It is focused and delineated, with black fruit mixed with graphite and melted tar, almost Saint-Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite minerally and lively without the depth of the 2022, yet rather elegant and refined on the finish. This constitutes a very gracious Margaux and as I tried second and third bottles towards the end of my trip, it just seemed to get better and better.

Although its location, terroir and reputation largely deserved to be included in the 1855 classification, the Toulouse-Lautrec family, owners of Siran, Legitimists and true to their family tradition, were invited to enter into this "Bonapartist classification". are included, rejected. † Once classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel next to the castles of Phélan-Ségur, Haut-Marbuzet, Chasse-Spleen, Château Siran now charts its own unique and unique path towards excellence.
The family story began in the mid-18th century, when this complete, harmonious estate, rich in biodiversity, seduced Léo Barbier with undeniable charm. The 17 hectare vineyard, in a single block, in the heart of the largest terroirs of the Médoc. Léo Barbier, a wine merchant from Bordeaux, recognized the qualities of this jewel. After it was acquired on 14 January 1859 from Jeanne-Adèle, Countess of Toulouse-Lautrec, he decided to develop and embellish the property.
His two daughters married the brothers Paul and Alexandre Sollberg in 1866. But the two sons-in-law went bankrupt between 1883-85 and hurriedly left to live in Argentina. In 1885, the family called on a cousin, Fréderic Miailhe, son of Elie Miailhe and Lovely Sollberg, to manage Siran with a Sollberg son-in-law, Marcel Mortier. Fréderic Miailhe, a wine broker, fell in love with Siran and devoted himself to it. So much so that in 1915 he bought back his aunts Sollberg's shares. We are deeply indebted to him, especially for the still delicious 1918 vintage.
Château Siran is located in the village of Labarde in the extreme south of the Margaux appellation. Siran has 25 hectares of vineyard on a large plateau of gravel. The vineyards are planted with cabernet sauvignon (50%), merlot (30%), petit verdot (12%) and cabernet franc (8%).
Named after Château Siran, the main wine is the result of a subtle blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, reflecting the identity of its terroir. The relatively high percentage of petit verdot provides a spicy note that enhances the unique character of Siran's wines.
