Winery Château Marquis d'Alesme

Château Marquis d'Alesme is a Troisième Grand Cru Classé from Margaux with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Under the leadership of the Perrodo family, the château has made a clear leap forward in quality in recent years. Modern precision in the cellar is combined with a strong focus on terroir expression and refinement. The style is quintessentially Margaux: aromatic, elegant, and with silky tannins. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region and terroir

The vineyards are situated on the classic gravel plateaus of Margaux, with a subsoil of clay and limestone. These soils ensure good drainage and slow, even ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The result is wines with finesse, floral complexity, and a distinctive minerality.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The 2023 is a classic Margaux blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as the base, supplemented with small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This precise composition underscores the elegant signature of the house, emphasizing balance and aromatic expression.

Harvest, vinification and maturation

After careful selection, the grapes are fermented by plot. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, with precision and integration of the wood as key features. In 2023, this results in a wine with structure and tension, without losing any refinement.

Color, smell and taste

Deep ruby red with purple highlights. The nose opens with black cherries, blueberries, and cassis, followed by floral notes and refined woody spices. Subtle nuances of creamy spice and a light, exotic touch add complexity.

On the palate, the 2023 is medium to full-bodied, compact, and precise. Fine-grained, well-structured tannins provide length and direction. The fruit is ripe but not overpowering, with tension and freshness that keep the wine elegant. The finish is long, structured, and refined, with a silky yet powerful texture.

Drinking window and development

James Suckling's Zekun Shuai rated the wine 94 points and recommends drinking it from 2028 onwards. Neal Martin of Vinous also awarded it 94 points, calling the wine expressive, floral, and impressively balanced, with a drinking window of 2027 to 2045. The wine combines early charm with sufficient structure for further aging.

Summary of professional reviews

With consistent scores of 94 points, the 2023 Marquis d'Alesme is praised for its floral expression, black fruit notes, and refined tannin structure. The combination of tension, silky texture, and long finish makes this one of the standout Margaux wines of the vintage. The full review texts can be found in the Professional Reviews tab.

Château Marquis d'Alesme (Becker) is a 3rd Cru Classé and is located in Margaux. With 15 hectares, the estate can be called small, especially compared to other châteaux in the area. Since Nathalie Perrodo has taken the helm, the shorter version of the name has been used and the word 'Becker' has been abandoned.

Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker was acquired in 2006 by Hubert Perrodo, who also owns Château Labégorce. Since then the quality has improved by leaps and bounds. Like Labégorce, Marquis d'Alesme is today run by Hubert Perrodo's daughter, Nathalie Perrodo. Her background, half-Chinese/half-French, is reflected in the winery's architecture. Indeed, in 2015, Marquis d'Alesme underwent a thorough renovation under the direction of Fabien Pedelaborde, who was also responsible for the renovation of Château Soutard in Saint-Émilion.
