Château Maillet is a relatively small estate in Pomerol that has seen a significant increase in quality in recent years. The château is situated in a favorable location within the appellation and works with great attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar. The style of Château Maillet is modern, with an emphasis on ripe fruit, structure, and precision. However, scarcity is a problem, as the vineyard is only 2.5 hectares in size. The wines combine the typical roundness of Pomerol with a clear focus on balance and aging potential. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

Pomerol is one of the most prestigious appellations of Bordeaux and is known for its Merlot-driven wines. The vineyards of Château Maillet are situated on soils of clay and gravel, which provide concentration and structure. The clay gives the wine power and depth, while the gravel ensures drainage and finesse. This combination yields wines with ripe fruit, a soft texture, and a long finish.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2023 Château Maillet is typical of Pomerol, with Merlot as the main grape, complemented by smaller quantities of Cabernet Franc. Merlot provides ripe dark fruit and a soft structure, while Cabernet Franc adds freshness and aromatic complexity. The grapes are carefully selected to achieve an optimal balance between ripeness and structure. The vineyard is 2.5 hectares, so the wine is always produced in small quantities.

Vinification and aging

After the harvest, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled tanks. Extraction is carefully managed to preserve both structure and finesse. The wine then ages in oak barrels, which provides additional complexity and a subtle influence of wood. This aging imparts notes of toast and spices and contributes to the wine's structure. The wood tannins are still present in youth but will further integrate during bottle aging.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a deep ruby red color. On the nose, rich aromas of ripe black plums, dark chocolate, and warm spices emerge, complemented by notes of toasted bread and wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with a soft yet firm texture. The fruit is ripe and concentrated, supported by fresh acidity and fine tannins. The finish is long and powerful, with a combination of fruit, wood, and a light spiciness that lingers.

Style and character

The 2023 Château Maillet is an opulent and modern Pomerol, with a rich and full style. At the same time, the wine remains balanced due to its structure and freshness. This is a wine that impresses even in its youth, but becomes particularly interesting after a few years of aging when the oak influence is better integrated.

Volume

The 2023 vintage yields a wine with ripe fruit and a firm structure. The wine is currently still young and needs time to fully open up. According to Zekun Shuai of Suckling (94 points), the wine displays a combination of ripe fruit, chocolate, and spiciness, with a long and structured finish. The drinking window starts around 2028, when the wine will show more harmony.
