Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Winery
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is an iconic Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien, managed by Bruno Borie. The estate takes its name from the large pebbles, the "beaux cailloux," that characterize the terroir and ensure excellent drainage and heat retention. The style of Ducru-Beaucaillou is intense, refined, and distinctly aromatic, with Cabernet Sauvignon as its foundation. Precision in the vineyard and careful, classic cellaring are at the heart of the vision. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region and terroir
The vineyards are situated directly on the Gironde estuary in Saint-Julien, on deep gravel layers rich in large boulders. This terroir promotes perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with structure, aromatic finesse, and a distinct mineral signature. The proximity of the river moderates the climate and contributes to even ripening.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2023 is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon underscores the estate's classic profile. The selection is rigorous, focused on concentration and balance, aiming for maximum precision in the fruit and a refined tannin structure.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The vinification focuses on extraction while preserving finesse. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels, which contributes to texture and depth without losing its elegance. The 2023 shows a clear focus on textural richness and harmony, with a refined integration of oak and fruit.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the 2023 presents itself with a deep ruby red color and purple hues. The nose is distinctly aromatic with violets, lavender, blackcurrants, and blueberries, complemented by notes of orange peel and a subtle hint of pencil shavings. As the wine opens, nuances of truffle, rose petals, pomegranate, and fresh herbs emerge.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and exceptionally refined. The tannins are ultra-fine and polished, almost silky, creating a sensual and enveloping structure. Dark fruit is supported by fresh acidity and a mineral undertone. The balance between creamy opulence and lively tension makes this Saint-Julien both seductive and serious. The finish is long, seamless, and elegant.
Drinking window and development
James Suckling awarded the 2023 vintage 97 points, highlighting its refined tannins and aromatic intensity. Antonio Galloni of Vinous awarded it 95-97 points, with an expected drinking window of 2033 to 2063. While the wine already shows charm, it will gain complexity with a few years of bottle aging and can develop over several decades.

Extremely perfumed, with violets, lavender, black currants, blueberries and light orange peel. Hints of lead pencil. It's medium-bodied and so poised, showing ultrafine, polished tannins. Seductive and caressing, with a long, seamless finish. A blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% merlot. So delicious now but better after 2018. Drink or hold.

2033 - 2063
From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a heady, sumptuous Saint-Julien. The aromatics alone are captivating. Truffle, rose petal, blood orange, pomegranate, spice and menthol build in a creamy, lavish Ducru. The 2023 is a classic Bruno Borie wine that emphasizes textural opulence. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous floral and spice-driven top notes. The balance of opulence and vibrancy is compelling.

Drinking Window
2030 - 2065
From: The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou, matured in 100% new oak for a planned 18 months, has a less forceful bouquet than the 2022 last year and, consequently, shows more refinement and poise. The scents don't come barging out of the blocks, but they creep up on you. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry. Showing moderate depth, it’s quite linear in style and grippy. A faint touch of bell pepper emerges on the classically styled finish that reminds me of some of the old vintages of Ducru-Beaucaillou. This is the strictest vintage I have encountered in some time.
- By Neal Martin on April 2024
Bruno Borie was not there during my visit to Ducru-Beaucaillou, so Tracey Dobbin MW guided me through their wines. “There was abundant flowering,” she explained. “We had 10 to 12 buds to reduce but still produced 41hL/ha. The weather was tropical and punctuated with storms, so we had to remove a lot of unhealthy fruit to end up with 6 to 8 bunches per vine before véraison. We removed around half the canopy. We had a lot of teams that were proactively combatting mildew and planting grasses to cope with humidity. There was a late-season heat wave from August 16 to September 10, unprecedented at that point of the year. We had teams out in the vineyard tasting each day. We picked earlier than anticipated, starting September 8, with the Merlots harvested very quickly. The September rain unblocked some of the Cabernets. We had very plush and rounded Merlots instead of more Cabernet-like Merlots, the Cabernets floral, linear and layered. They had very different personalities. We did a little bleeding on some of the Cabernets.”

The Borie family has now owned this stately château for three generations, overlooking the Gironde. Since he took over the château in 2003, Bruno Borie has had only one goal: to make Ducru-Beaucaillou one of the best wines in the Médoc. The vineyards are planted with cabernet sauvignon (70%) and merlot (30%). As the name of the château implies, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is blessed with a grand pebble-rich terroir that produces perfect cabernet sauvignon. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from its "beautiful pebbles" ("beaux Cailloux", in French) which geologists less romantically refer to as Gunzian gravel. These quartz pebbles were deposited by the ancient Garonne at the beginning of the early Quaternary, some two million years ago. It is enough to take a walk through the vineyards to find rich lithological finds. Lydian jasper from the Pyrenees, flint, quartz, agatoids ... This Gunzian gravel creates soils poor in plant nutrients. But it is precisely their agricultural scarcity that guarantees the qualitative excellence of the wines. A choice from nature.
At Ducru-Beaucaillou, excellence is formed inch by inch thanks to an understanding of what the vines have to offer. Experience, intuition, asking questions, for a symbiosis with Mother Earth; people only pass through these noble terroirs. Since nature is a "subject of law", every procedure in the vineyard respects the entire ecosystem: herbicides have been abandoned in favor of mechanical weeds and judicious turf; replacing chemical fertilizers with manure and quality compost; insecticides with pheromones to control vine moths or kaolin clay to lure the green locust. Measures to facilitate aeration and sun exposure of the bunches, to avoid Botrytis and, if applicable, bacilli. Constant monitoring of available nitrogen before harvest. Reasonable viticulture, which earned the property ISO 14001 certification in 2016, supplemented with HVE3 certification (high environmental value level 3) since 2017.
