How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inChâteau de Beaucastel is nestled in a magical setting dotted with vineyards, ancient olive trees, and truffle oaks. Beaucastel is Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most famous wine. Here, nature is found in its purest form, where its power is at its most at peace. The characteristic rolled stones are the secret of its vineyards, where gnarled vines grow in the traditional "gobelet" shape. On this ancient soil, we find the 13 grape varieties authorized in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. All 13 of these grape varieties form the basis of Château de Beaucastel's legendary blends, where they are grown biodynamically. This allows them to be one of the last to utilize the richness and complexity that this blend offers.
Beaucastel's history begins in the early 17th century. The Perrins family arrived in the early 20th century. Five generations later, we now have a global company specializing in quality wines, ranging from very affordable to the absolute top. All the vision, technique, and vineyard management that earned Beaucastel its coveted global top position are applied to the vineyards and wines from other appellations, such as Ventoux, Luberon, Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Rasteau, and Vacqueyras. While retaining its own distinct character, the wines differ significantly and demonstrate the respectful approach.
Coudoulet wines can reach unprecedented heights in exceptional vintages and are often preferred over the much more expensive Beaucastels. This is especially true at an early stage, in anticipation of the development of the Beaucastel wines, which usually reap their full and convincing rewards with later age. Here we get to the heart of the matter. The material with the greatest long-term potential and the most finesse is destined for Beaucastel. With Coudoulet, we experience how this early pleasure is irresistibly expressed in the young wine.
The red Coudoulet is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, and 20% Cinsault. The grapes are hand-harvested, and selection takes place in the vineyard and on the selection tables. The final grapes are first briefly heated to 30°C and then cooled back down to 20°C. This organic method removes any unwanted yeasts. The grapes are vinified individually and then blended, and the blend is aged for 6-8 months in large oak barrels. The Beaucastel Coudoulet Rouge offers a surprisingly ripe, rounded style with notes of strawberry, raspberry, and peppery spice. The wine is clear and lively. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine is pleasantly creamy and has hints of thyme. A beautiful finish with soft tannins.

The 2023 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel reveals aromas of dark berries, flowers, spices and garrigue, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, round and charming palate framed by velvety tannins. It concludes with a long, fruity and gourmand finish. This is a great vintage for Coudoulet—a blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault.
Château de Beaucastel has long produced some of the Southern Rhône’s most long-lived red wines. Yet beyond their capacity for graceful evolution, what distinguishes Beaucastel is a consistent thread of elegance and finesse that persists through even the most structured and concentrated vintages. Since the passing of Jacques Perrin in 1978, the estate has adhered rigorously to organic viticulture across its 110 hectares in the northern reaches of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, eschewing chemical treatments in favor of a holistic approach to farming.
His sons, François and Jean-Pierre Perrin, have remained steadfast in preserving the founding ethos: that wine must be made naturally; that Mourvèdre should anchor the blend; and that the intrinsic character of the wine must never be compromised by modern enological shortcuts. Under their stewardship, Beaucastel has remained a beacon of authenticity.
Today, the next generation, led by César Perrin, continues to build on this legacy while responding to new challenges. In the cellar, César has preserved the domaine’s traditional practices—including whole-cluster fermentations and élevage in large oak foudres—while making subtle adjustments to address the effects of a warming climate. Notably, he has increased the proportion of Counoise in the blend to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity.
The 2023s are particularly successful, combining technical precision with the identity of the vintage. Cool-toned, precise and dense without excess weight, they rank among the most compelling wines of the appellation. The broader Famille Perrin range also delivers outstanding quality across the board, confirming the family’s deep commitment to excellence well beyond the confines of Beaucastel itself.

A solid, focused, juicy and poised wine, showing red berries, sweet spices and dried-flower aromas. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Lovely crushed-strawberry character to the silky texture. Bright and fruit-forward, this has a seductive, succulent finish and a lift of peppercorns. Drink or hold.

From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2024: Dark Elegance (Oct 2025)
The 2023 Côtes-du-Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel turned out well, unwinding with fragrant black cherry, blackberry and earthy scents. Medium-bodied, silky and refreshing, the 2023 is a delicate, finesse-driven red Côtes-du-Rhône from the talented Perrin family, clocking out with energy on the refined finish. Cropped at roughly 28 hl/ha.

This year’s tasting at Château de Beaucastel, led by both César and François Perrin, reaffirmed the estate’s place among the appellation’s finest. Their new state-of-the-art winery is now fully operational, and I encourage readers traveling in the region to try to secure an appointment. César Perrin confirmed that Syrah continues to be replaced with Counoise in the vineyard, while trials with clay applications are ongoing. “If you apply clay to the grapes, it can draw out moisture and concentrate them, which is not what we want. This year, we began applying it even before flowering. It can help slow down the all-too-rapid sugar accumulation that can occur before the grapes are physiologically ripe in warm summers,” said César Perrin. The revised process, he added, is remarkably efficient, taking only about 20 minutes per hectare. As for what’s in the glass, not a single wine in this tasting fell short. Even the entry-level Côtes-du-Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel red and white both shine in 2023, delivering freshness and refinement at affordable prices. At the pinnacle, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin stands tall as one of the wines of the vintage. César Perrin confirmed there will be an Hommage à Jacques Perrin in 2024, but it wasn’t available for tasting during my visit.
