Description
Wine & Soul was founded in 2001 by Sandra Tavares da Silva (Quinta do Vale D. Maria and Quinta de Chocapalha) and her husband Jorge Borges (then Niepoort, now Passadouro). The name Wine & Soul was chosen because the winemakers put their heart and soul into making wines that symbolize their lives. They bought a vineyard with very old vines of 2 hectares in Vale de Mendiz next to Quinta do Noval. From the first harvest, the couple has become among the icons of the Douro and are nationally and internationally praised for the charm and character of their wines that represent the unique terroir of the Douro region. In 2009, the couple inherited Quinta da Manoella, a fantastic estate with mainly very old vineyards that are oriented to the south.
The Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas from Wine & Soul is made from 30 indigenous grape varieties that grow on a very old vineyard of more than 100 years old. As soon as the grapes are perfectly ripe it is time to harvest, the grapes are very strictly selected and destemmed after which they are traditionally crushed with the feet in lagares (large concrete tubs). By crushing the grapes with the feet, as much color as possible and less rough tannins are added to the final wine because in this way few grape seeds are crushed that release these rough tannins. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks followed by no less than 20 months of aging in new (30%) and used (70%) French oak barrels.
The very complex Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas shows intense aromas of black fruit, cassis and plums on the nose. Ripe, round, balanced on the palate with aromas of plum, cassis, blackberries, dark chocolate, mineral and subtle spiciness with a graceful intense finish. Perfect in combination with red meat and game dishes with strong sauces and hard cheeses. 95/100 Parker.

The 2020 Pintas is a field blend (over 40 grapes, but the dominant grapes are Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional) from old vines (around 90 years) aged for 20 months in 20% new French oak. It comes in at 14.4% alcohol. This may have been a tougher vintage in many respects, but it was a small crop harvested quickly and early. This multilayered Pintas is ripe and darkly flavored but never over the top and rather fresh. There's plenty of power on the finish too, and it simply grips the palate. This needs to be socked away for a few years. I tasted the final blend and out of barrel, but it was not yet bottled, about three weeks away. Plan on cellaring it. It should age for 30 years, more or less.
A lot of people complain about the 2020 vintage, hot and difficult, but Wine & Soul had a fine year, often propelled by the ability to harvest small crops quickly. Consistency, even in difficult vintages, is often the sign of a great winery.

The 2021 Pintas has an impressive nose—open, extroverted, aromatic and floral, a little toasty and smoky. This is always produced from the same vineyard at 400 to 450 meters above sea level on schist soils. It's spicy and has some creaminess, but it feels balanced and has freshness and acidity to absorb the oak with more time in bottle. It matured in 225-liter barrels, 20% of them new, for 20 months. This vineyard is very consistent; the old vines have deep roots, and the high altitude contributes to the freshness—and the 2021 vintage also helps! 6,000 bottles produced.
Wine & Soul, Jorge Serôdio and Sandra Tavares, have concentrated their efforts in the last years in the vineyards. They have grown from the initial two hectares for Pintas to over 40 hectares today. The portfolio has also grown, and so have volumes. They now produce 180,000 bottles, including Port.
