Winery Viña Mein / Emilio Rojo
Emilio Rojo is an iconic name within Ribeiro and is known for its extremely precise and small-scale approach. Since 2019, the estate has been part of the Pago de Carraovejas group, with the same team as Viña Mein responsible for vineyard management and vinification. The philosophy remains unchanged: an extreme focus on plot, grape, and detail, aiming to fully express the unique character of this historic vineyard. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The Emilio Rojo vineyard is located in Ribeiro, in northwestern Spain, on the slopes of the Avia Valley near the village of Ibedo. The terraces face the morning sun, ensuring gradual and balanced ripening. The 2022 vintage was marked by extreme heat and drought, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees in the summer. Despite these conditions, the vines adapted well, resulting in concentrated yet surprisingly fresh wines.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The wine comes from a single vineyard with a traditional co-planting of local grape varieties: Treixadura, Lado, Godello, Albariño, Caíño Blanco, Torrontés, and Loureira. This blend of varieties reflects the historical diversity of Ribeiro and ensures complexity and balance. The vineyard consists of old terraces that were re-established in the 1980s and have been maintained with great care ever since. Each vine is individually assessed and harvested at the optimal moment.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The harvest took place in multiple passes in late August and early September. The grapes were carefully selected, both in the vineyard and upon arrival at the cellar. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, where the wine matured for approximately 12 months. Subsequently, the wine was bottled and aged in the bottle for another 24 months before being released onto the market. This approach ensures a pure and transparent expression of the terroir.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a clear, light golden-yellow color with a lively appearance. On the nose, refined aromas of citrus, white flowers, and wet stones emerge, complemented by spicy and slightly pollen-like notes. There is a distinct minerality on the nose typical of this vineyard.
On the palate, the wine is harmonious and precise, with a ripe fruit profile beautifully balanced by fresh acidity and a characteristic granite-like minerality. The structure is round but not heavy, with a refined texture and a long, elegant finish. The wine combines ripeness with tension and develops in layers in the glass.
Development and drinking window
The wine is already very drinkable but clearly has aging potential, especially considering this is a magnum. The drinking window is between 2025 and 2035, during which the wine will continue to develop towards greater complexity and integration of aromas.
Summary of professional reviews
According to Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate, 95 points), the 2022 Emilio Rojo is an example of precision and balance, with aromas of herbs, wet stones, and flowers. The wine combines ripeness with freshness and has a distinctive mineral tension that sets it apart within the region. The full review texts can be found in the tab: Professional reviews.

2025 - 2032
The wine remains the same, a single cuvée from the vineyard co-planted with Treixadura, Lado, Godello, Albariño, Caíño Blanco, Torrontés and Loureira that Emilio tended all his life. The 2022 Emilio Rojo has a bright, almost fluorescent color and a textbook nose with herbal notes, hints of wet stones and pollen. It's clean and harmonious, undeveloped, with a mellow palate that reflects a warmer and riper year but with the spark of granite minerality that makes it one of the most delicious whites from the zone. It has good ripeness (13% alcohol) and a balanced 3.37 pH. 2,704 bottles were filled in the summer of 2023.
Emilio Rojo has been part of the Pago de Carraovejas group of wineries since 2019, and the same team that is in charge of Viña Mein, the other property they bought in Ribeiro, also manages the vineyards and wine here.

Viña Meín is one of those wineries that instantly sparks curiosity. Small in scale, but big in story. Tucked away in the green hills of Galicia, wine has been made here for centuries — and you can taste that history in every bottle.
Viña Meín history & location
The estate is located in Leiro, in the heart of Ribeiro, one of Spain’s oldest wine regions. As early as the 12th century, monks from the San Clodio monastery were cultivating vines in this valley. Centuries later, in 1988, Javier Alén breathed new life into the property by replanting the historic vineyards. Today, Viña Meín has grown into a benchmark in Ribeiro, with a strong focus on local grape varieties and authentic wines.
Grape varieties in Ribeiro
The strength of Viña Meín lies in the diversity of its grapes. Treixadura is the leading variety, loved for its fresh and aromatic character. Alongside it are Albariño, Godello, Torrontés, Loureira, Lado, and Albilla. For the reds, they work with native grapes such as Caíño Longo, Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto. Together, they create a wide palette of flavors that is unique to Ribeiro.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards are spread across small plots in the Avia Valley. The landscape is rugged and hilly, with terraces and steep slopes. The soil is mainly granite and sand, locally known as “sábrego.” The climate plays a crucial role: warm days and cool nights, with temperature differences that can reach up to twenty degrees. This slows down ripening and gives the wines tension and aromatic depth. Each vineyard has its own personality, which shines through in the diversity of the wines.
How the wines are made
At Viña Meín, it’s all about respecting the grape. Harvesting is done by hand, in small crates. Most of the white wines ferment in stainless steel to preserve freshness, while the best plots are aged in large oak barrels and spend months on the lees. This adds depth and complexity, without letting oak dominate. The red wines are traditionally fermented and aged, with a focus on finesse rather than sheer power.
Specialties & facts
What makes Viña Meín stand out is how it blends old traditions with modern techniques. In 2019, the winery joined forces with Pago de Carraovejas, a renowned producer from Ribera del Duero. Since then, there has been more attention to sustainability and precision in the vineyards. Winemaker Laura Montero leads the cellar, with support from French oenologist Dominique Roujou de Boubée. Together, they are putting Ribeiro’s native grapes more firmly on the map.
