Description
Sindicat La Figuera started as a small cooperative in the Montsant mountains, founded in 1932, producing wines of clarity and integrity and as of the 2020 vintage this wine is made entirely by Rene Barbier and Sara Perez (you know, the ones from the Dido, Venus , Partida , Mas Martinet and the Clos Mogador ) and now goes by the name Venus la Universal Sindicat La Figuera You have to drive up the mountainside on very narrow, winding roads to reach the town of La Figuera, which is at an altitude of 600 metres and has a population of just 80. The town seems to rise out of the top of the mountain, with the surrounding mountains and the Priorat region in sight in all directions.
In the early 1930s, when the cooperative was founded, La Figuera was a bustling town; there were 25 residents who were involved in the creation of the winery and who contributed grapes to the first harvest. Garnatxa, as the Catalans call it, has always been planted around La Figuera and has always been the main grape used for Sindicat’s flagship wine. While Cariñena is typically blended with Garnatxa in Montsant, La Figuera is known for the beauty and elegance of their pure Garnatxa wines and is one of the few places where it is bottled on its own. The town flourished until the mid-1950s, when a major storm devastated the area, followed by a severe frost the following year. Residents fled and many of the vineyards were destroyed and abandoned.
La Figuera never really regained its population, although a few dedicated citizens replanted Garnatxa vines, and there are now just three passionate members who have vowed to keep the cooperative alive. Renowned Priorat winemaker René Barbier also took notice of La Figuera’s Garnatxa wines and decided to join forces with the cooperative members to help make wine. Rene says that you can always tell when a wine comes from La Figuera because there is a unique limestone content in the soil that makes the Garnatxa lighter. In addition to preserving these special wines, Rene also wanted to keep alive the heritage of the people’s cooperative movement, a movement that began in Catalonia’s post-phylloxera era in the early 20th century.
Sindicat La Figuera works with 25 hectares of Garnatxa Fina and the vines vary in age from 20-70 years. The Venus la Universal Sindicat La Figuera is made by René Barbier (from Clos Mogador among others). It is a characteristic and rustic red with the chalky tannins of the limestone soils and the scent of the Garnacha from the village. Wines are fermented with wild yeasts in underground concrete tanks with minimal temperature control, where they mature for about 9 months on fine lees before being bottled with light clarification and filtration. It is a great accessible wine. Red fresh fruit, the typical mineral aromas and flavors. Elegant, fresh and juicy that is the best to summarize this delicious wine and not surprisingly that even this very affordable wine from Rene Barbier has been awarded 90/100 Parker points since the 2018 vintage. The 2022 even gets 91/100 from Parker. Very special for a wine in this price category but absolutely justified

The change in 2022 Sindicat La Figuera is an earlier harvest to keep more freshness (it has 14% alcohol), but it remains a red with a short maceration and aging underground in concrete with epoxy. They have never used selected yeasts in the cooperative. This is the only wine from their portfolio (and the rest of their projects) with a fruit-driven profile, as it has a short élevage; the rest usually spend two winters in the winery. La Figuera is a cooler village with the highest altitude in Montsant, and the wine shows the freshness, even in this very warm year. It has ripe Garnacha aromas; the fruit is very different from the rest of Montsant, with more herbal notes, floral, aromatic, lighter, with a medium-bodied palate, weightless (good yields and short macerations) and very fine tannins. This is very easy to drink, a lighter and very approachable style of Montsant, closer to Gredos than Châteauneuf. 55,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in July 2023.
Venus La Universal is the project from Sara Pérez and René Barbier in Montsant, where they work with nine hectares of their own vineyards plus 35 hectares from 14 growers, all certified organic and exclusively with those grapes (they don't buy other grapes). They produce 160,000 bottles. Since 2021, they have been renting the La Figuera cooperative, and the wine (Sindicat La Figuera) from there is now part of the Venus portfolio. Taking advantage of the facilities from La Figuera, they are doing other side projects (mostly without appellation), such as a Trepat, a wine with flor, perhaps a Cabernet... These Orbita Venus (Venus orbit), the things that are around Venus, will come in the future...
After a very rainy and unusual 2020 (770 liters of rain!), a very challenging year with lots of mildew, 2021 was marked by a snowstorm in January and was a cooler season with generous rain that delivered a crop for lighter wines with tension and contained alcohol. 2022 was warm and dry (only 350 liters of rain) and had multiple heat waves from May. They compared 2022 to 2015 (or 2009), a powerful year, but with less rain, both with good water reserves from the previous vintage and a great development of the plants, which were not stressed. The stress arrived in 2023. They like dry years that come with "wet feet," i.e., with water from the previous vintage. The wines are superb and feel more elegant than ever.

Venus la universal is the project of Sara Pérez she is the wife of Rene Barbier who makes the famous Clos Mogador, Espectacle and Manyetes. Sara Pérez is also in charge of the Clos Martinet family domain. In addition, she works closely with her brother Adria on Cims de Porrera. Father José Luis Pérez, one of the most important figures in the Spanish wine world, is proud of his children. He himself remains active in various wine projects. Sara Pérez owns and vinifies two beautiful wines on Venus La Universal, together with her husband René Barbier (Clos Mogador). As a tribute to every small food manufacturer from the 1920s who wanted to become big, Sara has baptized this mini-domain Compania Universal de Vinos. There on 'La Uni', as she likes to call it, she has created almost the mother of all feminine wines: Venus. And 'Dido' is the more than exemplary daughter of 'Venus'.
René and Sara took the goddess Venus as inspiration for this project. One of their goals is therefore to "interpret femininity through a bottle of wine". This may seem like a strange choice for a bodega working out Grenache and Carignan wines in Southern Catalonia, but it makes sense once you've tasted it. These are incredibly elegant, refined, sensual expressions from the Denominació d'Origen Montsant, with understated alcohol levels and enormous texture.
The grapes for the wines come from vineyards owned by four different grape-growing families in Falset, as well as another small plot owned by Venus. You could call Venus a negociative project, but it is more correct to say that it is a partnership between these four families and René and Sara. Venus is the sole customer of these small growers, so their grapes are grown in accordance with the strict ecological standards set by the couple. The grapes for Dido come from the Falset area, from vineyards with soils based on decomposed granite called sauló. These soils are low in organic matter and contribute to the production of grapes with great ripeness and fruit aromas. The grapes for Venus come from clay-limy soils between Marçà and Guiamets. These soils promote a slow, elegant and complex maturity.
