Description
One family: Antinori, one passion: Wine. Brothers Piero and Lodovico Antinori are the owners of the beautiful Tenuta di Biserna in Tocane. According to Parker: "Tenuta di Biserno remains one of the best kept secrets in Bolgheri". The Biserno is named after the winery because the wine reflects the terroir and microclimate of the area around the winery. A nice way to name your wine. Only the best grapes are selected for the blend, resulting in a wine of depth, intensity, complexity, durability and elegance.
Bolgheri region and terroir
The vineyards are located on gentle slopes at 100 m altitude, with soils of Bolgheri conglomerate, clay and limestone. This sea breeze-influenced terroir gives freshness and minerality. The Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights promotes optimal ripening.
grape varieties and vineyards
The 2022 Biserno is a signature Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The grapes come from different plots, carefully harvested and selected, contributing to the complex mix of flavors and structure.
vinification and maturation
The wine undergoes fermentation in stainless steel and barrels, followed by ageing in barriques (partly new) and large oak foudres for up to around 14 months. This approach gives the wine both richness and finesse, with soft tannins and layered aromas.
color, odor and flavor profile
The 2022 Biserno shows itself deep ruby red in the glass. On the nose, notes of black cherries, cassis, cedar, spicy herbs and smoky earthy accents appear. On the palate, the wine is full and lush, with silky tannins, fresh acidity and a mineral undertone. The finish is long, with hints of spices, tobacco and a subtle wood note.
why order this wine?
This 2022 Biserno shows the unique signature that Bolgheri and Antinori produce together: elegance, structure and depth in balance. With its layers of fruit, refined wood insert and gastronomic usability, it offers both immediate pleasure and aging potential.

The 2020 Biserno is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small part Petit Verdot. This is an enriched and profound wine with round tones of black fruit, spice, cured tobacco and tarry smoke. Biserno is shapely and generous with a full-bodied approach that is accented by crushed stone and pencil shaving. You get a lot of intensity and texture with this opulent, cellar-worthy wine.

Intensity and elegance dominate in this wine. The nose shows aromatic herbs, eucalyptus, bramble fruit and sweet spices. Full-bodied, it has firm, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity, a slightly chalky finish and a long, savory aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best in two or three years.

From: Exploring New Releases from Coastal Tuscany (Aug 2023)
The 2020 Biserno is one of the best wines I can remember tasting here. Rich yet vibrant, the 2020 presents a much more restrained style than was once the norm. There is still plenty of intensity, but energy and vibrancy have replaced volume as signatures. Espresso, menthol, licorice, cloves and leather are some of the many notes that build in this powerful, elegant Maremma red. Gorgeous Franc aromatics open the finish effortlessly.

In 1995, Lodovico Antinori discovered the potential of an area on the outskirts of Bolgheri for viticulture. After an evaluation, he saw the unique characteristics of this area and was convinced that he could create something new and unique in the wine world. A few years later, the Antinori family (Piero, Lodovico, Ilaria and his son Niccolò) and landowner Umberto Mannoni started founding Tenuta di Biserno. Adjacent to the historic village of Bolgheri, with a beautiful view of the Tyrrhenian sea.
The Tuscan winery has 49 hectares of estate and is located in Alta Maremma in western Tuscany between the hills of Bibbona. Due to the specific soil and climate characteristics, the area is divided into two zones. The Bolgheri area has a subsoil of rock; on these 40 hectares, the vines for Biserno and Il Pino di Biserno are planted. The vines planted on the vineyards are mainly Cabernet Franc and Merlot and in smaller quantities Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tenuta Campo di Sasso, on the other hand, has 56 hectares with mixed (and mainly) sandy soils. This area is close to the sea and is therefore very suitable for varieties such as Syrah and Vermentino. Occhione and Insoglio del Cinghiale come from this area.
