2022 Soalheiro Oppaco Tinto
How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inSoalheiro Winery
Soalheiro was founded in 1974 in Monção e Melgaço, the northernmost part of Vinho Verde. The estate built its reputation on Alvarinho, but also works with indigenous red varietals from the region. The winery operates sustainably and is largely organic, with a strong focus on terroir, altitude, and Atlantic influence. The style is precise, fresh, and pure, with an emphasis on balance and digestibility. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
2022 Soalheiro Oppaco Tinto
Oppaco is the red interpretation of Soalheiro: fresh, mineral and purely Atlantic in character.
This 2022 vintage is made from indigenous grapes from northern Portugal, sourced from higher-altitude plots with a clear Atlantic influence. The vinification focuses on preserving freshness and aromatic precision, with controlled extraction and aging that allows the fruit to take center stage.
The 2022 vintage
2022 saw warm spells, but the high altitude and oceanic influence preserved acidity and aromatic finesse. Yields remained moderate, resulting in concentration without sacrificing elegance. The result is a wine with tension and clarity.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, Oppaco Tinto 2022 displays a bright ruby red color. The nose opens with red fruit notes such as cherry and wild berries, complemented by spicy and slightly earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is fresh and energetic, with lively acidity and fine tannins. The structure is slender yet precise, with a clean, slightly mineral finish that underscores the Atlantic character.

The nose reveals pepper, olive tapenade, dark fruit and dried flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is defined by firm, pleasantly rustic tannins, layered with dark fruit and wild berries. Firm in structure, yet touched with succulence. Drink now or hold.

Quinta de Soalheiro is located in the northernmost point of Portugal, in the sub-region of the Vinho Verde area, called Monção e Melgaço. Protected by a mountain range in the north, the vineyards are ideally located for growing the Alvarinho grape, with just enough of everything: sun, heat and rainfall. It was these unique circumstances that led João Antonio Cerdeira to plant his first alvarinho vineyard here in 1974. João has since been succeeded by his children Luis and Maria, who have further developed and perfected the company. Everything is done here with a great sense of detail. The vineyards are cultivated organically and the winemaking process has only one purpose: to make pure and harmonious wines. Soalheiro has a great reputation both in Portugal itself and abroad.
