The Remelluri Blanco magnums are always released (much) later by Telmo Rodriguez because Telmo believes his wines are drunk too young; so with our allocation of the 2023 vintage in 0.75-liter bottles, we were also allocated some magnums, including those of the 2022. The magnums have been allowed to age quietly in the Remelluri cellar, and this 1.5-liter magnum is packaged in a beautiful wooden box (OWC/1).
From the brilliant winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, this Remelluri Blanco is a blend of Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Moscatell, Marsanne, Roussane, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier, aged for 14 months in French oak. Parker considers this top wine a benchmark for white Riojas. A white wine for aging. Only a small quantity of Remelluri bottles is ever produced, and it is released by allocation. The Remelluri Blanco 2022, bottled in June 2024 (and not released until spring 2025), is a characterful and expressive white wine from high-altitude vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, between 605 and 805 meters above sea level. This altitude lends the wine a unique freshness and tension, despite the exceptionally dry and warm vintage. The wine is a blend of various white grape varieties that are vinified partly separately and subsequently aged for one year in a mix of used barriques, large foudres, and concrete eggs. This results in a complex texture and a wine with depth and nuance. In the glass, the wine reveals itself as aromatic and lively. The aroma opens with floral notes of acacia blossom, followed by ripe white fruit and subtle spiciness of white pepper. The taste is creamy and juicy, with a round, lush structure that contrasts with the beautiful acidity (5.68 g/l) and a pH of 3.24. The balance remains perfectly preserved thanks to the natural freshness and tension in the wine. It is a wine with power, finesse, and a future – a high-level white Rioja with limited availability (11,430 bottles produced). This wine clearly demonstrates what the Remelluri terroir can yield in the hands of experienced winemakers: a white wine with depth, energy, and aging potential. The white 2022 Blanco, produced with vines at high altitudes (between 605 and 805 meters above sea level). It's ripe, expressive and aromatic, with notes of acacia flowers, white fruit and pepper. It's tender and juicy, with spiciness and a creamy twist and ripeness reflecting the character of the very dry and warm year with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.24 and 5.68 grams of acidity. It has a round and fleshy mouthfeel. It mixes varieties and different vinifications and matured in used barriques, foudres and concrete eggs for one year. 11,430 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
The Remelluri range of wines is small, with just the Grand Vino, the white and the Yjar. The second wine is still in the making, and it will probably be more of a classical Reserva than a second wine in the Bordeaux sense, which was what they were initially planning.

This has aromas of citrus, crusted salt and touches of ginger, seashells and stony austerity. The palate is fleshy, fresh, bright and medium- to full-bodied, with concentration and creamy, almost phenolic tension that together with the bright acidity adds depth and dimension. Serious and structured but pleasant and approachable. A joy to drink, but will evolve favorably over the years. Drink or hold.

From: The Diverse Villages of Rioja: A New Trend Emerges (May 2025)
The 2022 Blanco Remelluri from Rioja Alavesa is a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Torrontés. Aged 12 months in seasoned barrels, foudres and 1,200-liter concrete eggs, followed by an 8-month blending period, it's a pale greenish yellow in hue and presents aromas of mild vanilla, herbs, water pear, orange blossom and delicate florals. Creamy and smooth in texture, with intense flavor and a rounded flow, the lengthy finish is driven by the interplay between the fruit and oak. The 2022 is a layered white with lasting character.

Telmo Rodríguez and his partner, Pablo Eguzkiza, are among the clearest thinkers shaping the future of Rioja. Through Lanzaga, Cosecheros de Labastida and Granja Remelluri, the pair offers a vision of Rioja grounded in a deep sense of place. Their reds display finely judged aging and extraction, reflecting a philosophy that filters the present through the lens of the past. They aim to recapture the character of the wines made before the devastation of phylloxera. Among their many site-specific interpretations, the restorations of Las Beatas and Tabúerniga stand out. Rodríguez and Eguzkiza’s latest project, Cosecheros de Labastida, highlights individual grower perspectives, with each label bearing a unique name and style. Profits are shared, and the concept is clear: to return creative agency to today’s harvesters, echoing the spirit of past generations.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
