Description
Paul Cluver is a household name with all his wines and is a grand master in white wines in particular, such as Chardonnay (who doesn't know the Seven Flags), Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling and of course the beautiful, almost Burgundy-like Pinot Noir.
The special climate of Elgin allows Paul Cluver to make wines with a special acid balance and an almost European style. The Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay is a beautiful cool climate Chardonnay from Elgin. The nose is characterized by subtle use of wood. Furthermore, there are hints of citrus and some blossom. In the mouth fresh acids and a somewhat creamy aftertaste. Delicious cool-climate Chardonnay supported by subtle use of wood.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will often also receive a nice discount . The 2021 Chardonnay pops out of the glass with aromas of fresh-cut lemons, yellow apples and a kiss of sea spray. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate reveals energetic acidity with delightful mineral tension before displaying a phenolic grip with notes of spiced white tea that linger through the bright and succulent finish. Just under 29,000 bottles were produced after the wine rested nine months in French oak.

From: The A to Z of South Africa (Nov 2023)
The 2020 Chardonnay Estate is whole bunch pressed, undergoing 100% wild fermentation and aged in 35% new oak for nine months with no SO2 addition. It has a well-controlled, sea spray-tinged bouquet, nicely focused and classical in style. The palate is well-balanced with peach skin and nectarine on the entry, a fine bead of acidity and a slight oiliness in terms of texture towards the finish. It fans out nicely and delivers the complexity expected. Recommended.

The 2020 Chardonnay Paul Cluver Estate is from three different sites, the fruit whole bunch pressed, aged in 25% new oak. It has a pretty lime and citrus peel bouquet with hints of apricot. The palate is well balanced with orange rind and fresh pear, nicely focused and the oak nicely integrated on the finish. There is a clear qualitative difference between this and the Village Chardonnay. Very fine.

Winemaker Andries Burger welcomed me at Paul Cluver Wines, an important Elgin estate. “We are now focused on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir,” he told me. (Their range once included Rieslings and other varieties.) “We are committed to improving soil health to enhance typicity of site, using cows to make our own compost and cultivating a diversity of cover crops between vine rows, spreading mulch under the vines and moving away from herbicides. We are converting our vines onto Guyot to rejuvenate them.”

Paul Cluver is located in Elgin, one of the coolest regions of South Africa. Paul Clüver is originally an apple company, but since 1986, on the initiative of owner Paul Clüver, also a wine company. Due to its location in a very cool area, directly by the sea, wines are made here with a remarkable finesse and freshness. Third generation starts with wine. The estate of the Clüver family, De Rust, was acquired in 1896 by the grandfather of the current owner, Paul Clüver.
Soil samples were taken during the 1980s, which showed that viticulture was perfectly possible here. It was then decided to replace part of the apple orchards with vineyards. It was initially agreed to process the grapes into wine on the Nederburg Estate, one of the
most famous houses of the Cape. The first grapes were planted in 1986: Sauvigon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Weisser Riesling. The latter grape has been planted to make sweet wines with the help of noble rot. The estate's wines are now entirely made in-house to give them their own character. Andries Burger, the winemaker of Paul Clüver, is responsible. Dr. Paul Clüver himself is still involved in his own profession: neurosurgery.
