Description
Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2023 is a wine that instantly brings a smile to your face. Fresh, fruity, and with that Tuscan flair you'll love to have in your glass. Perfect for any occasion and a pleasure to drink.
2023 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia
Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2023 is an accessible and lively wine from Bolgheri, Tuscany. This wine offers a beautiful balance of fruity and fresh flavors, perfect for a variety of occasions. The use of barriques previously used for the top wines Masseto and Ornellaia adds an extra layer of complexity.
In addition, the composition of the wine changes slightly every year, depending on the season, but always remains a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
Taste profile of the Le Volte
The 2023 Le Volte opens with aromas of ripe blueberries and blackberries. What follows is a rich, full-bodied palate that flows into a smooth, refined finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds depth, the Merlot smooths the wine, and the Petit Verdot adds a touch of complexity. The whole thing feels fresh and inviting, with a hint of pepperiness in the background.
The Growing Season
2022 in Bolgheri had a cool start, with a prolonged dry spell. The vines received little water, resulting in a smaller harvest, but the summer rains provided the vines with the energy they needed. Thanks to the cool nights in September, the grapes ripened perfectly.
Vinification of the 2023 Orneallaia Le Volte del'Ornellaia
The grapes were fermented separately in steel tanks, which preserves the individual characteristics of each varietal. After fermentation, malolactic fermentation followed in steel, followed by 10 months of aging in French barriques and concrete tanks. This ensures a good balance between the tannins and the fresh fruit notes.
Wine and food pairings
This wine pairs well with grilled meat, pasta with tomato sauce, roasted vegetables, or a piece of mature cheese. It's a versatile wine that can easily be served with a variety of dishes.
Drinking advice for Le Volte dell'Ornellaia
The 2023 Le Volte is delicious to drink now, but can also be kept until 2030. Serving suggestion: 16-18°C.

This is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. In this hot vintage, the Merlot was slightly reduced. The Ornellaia 2022 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia remains a plush and accessible Tuscan red. Harvest time saw lower yields on average, with smaller berries and greater fruit concentration. This wine matures in used oak passed down from the top-shelf wines. There is blackberry and dark cherry with sweet spice.
The 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is coming to market in March 2025, but the 2022 Masseto will not be released until September 2025. Today, Ornellaia counts 134 hectares of vines, including 11 hectares in Castagneto Carducci (with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Vermentino) that were added in 2022. Masseto covers 11 hectares of vines surrounded by forests. I tasted these wines with proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi at the estate. We were joined by the new Director of Production Marco Balsimelli, who worked in Bordeaux at the Laboratoire Oenologique Boissenot for 18 years before returning to his native Italy. He is joined by Ornellaia Winemaker Denise Cosentino and Vineyard Manager Giuliano Tarchi.

Very aromatic, with raspberry, orange peel and floral aromas. Nice transparency. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crisp, crunchy finish. Drinkable now, but better from 2026.

A fresh, expressive red, this also exhibits tension, lending energy to its black currant, cherry, licorice and cedar flavors. Graphite and salty accents add detail on the long, tightly wound finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2033. 15,000 cases imported.

From: 2025 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2025)
The 2023 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a total delight. Fresh, aromatic and vibrant, Ornellaia’s Sangiovese-based blend delivers the goods in an affordable package. A burst of bright, red-toned fruit opens first, followed by scents of tobacco, cedar and dried herbs. This classy, polished red is very nicely done. There’s a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend these days, and it works quite well.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2025
These new releases from Ornellaia are very good examples for their respective vintages. Le Volte is especially fine in 2023. Its combination of floral top notes and vibrant fruit is quite appealing. The flagship Ornellaia shows how advantaged blends are in challenging vintages such as 2022. Fine tuning makes all the difference. That is so evident in tasting it next to some of the single-variety wines of Bolgheri. The 2022 is the last vintage vinified by Estate Director Axel Heinz, who left in early 2023. The new team led by Winemaker Denise Cosentino and Production Manager Marco Balsimelli finished and bottled the 2022s. Yields are down because of intense heat and drought. The winemaking team favored light extractions, with a bit more time on the skins than typical for the Merlot, as it was harder to extract. The 2023 whites strike me as quite giving and accessible, even in the early going.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2023 is a wine that instantly brings a smile to your face. Fresh, fruity, and with that Tuscan flair you'll love to have in your glass. Perfect for any occasion and a pleasure to drink.
