history and vision of Opus One winery

The Opus One story began in 1979 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, a pioneer of Napa Valley, joined forces. Their ambition was to create a wine that embodied both the Bordeaux tradition and the innovative spirit of California. This collaboration resulted in a winery renowned worldwide for its uncompromising quality and consistent style. Today, the estate continues with the same dedication, and Opus One remains a symbol of international collaboration and visionary viticulture.

Napa Valley as a unique wine region

Opus One is located in the heart of Napa Valley, a region with an ideal climate for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. The location benefits from the cool influences of San Pablo Bay and warm summer days, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally while retaining their freshness. The combination of clay, loam, and gravel-rich soils gives the wines unique structure and complexity. These natural conditions form the basis for wines that combine elegance and power and have a long lifespan.

Opus One's wine portfolio

The winery primarily produces one iconic wine: Opus One. Year after year, they work on a blend that showcases a balanced expression of the terroir and grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon plays the leading role, complemented by Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small contribution of Malbec. This results in a wine that combines elegance, power, and refined depth.

2022 Opus One: grapes and vinification

The 2022 harvest was exceptional. The winter brought more rain than usual, followed by a dry spring and hot harvest conditions. Thanks to meticulous work in the vineyards and an early start to harvest on August 24th, a harvest of exceptional quality was achieved. This year's blend consists of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 0.5% Malbec. The grapes underwent a 20-day skin maceration to maximize color and flavor extraction. The wine was then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, which imparted refined oak notes and a firm yet elegant structure.

tasting notes of 2022 Opus One

The 2022 Opus One opens with aromatic layers of blueberries, cassis, and dried rose petals, complemented by notes of olive, cedar, graphite, and a hint of cigar box. On the palate, the wine offers a harmony of red fruits, cocoa, and fresh orange peel, which come together in a balanced and refined structure. The finish is long and elegant, with nuances of wet stone, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. The fine tannins and ripe structure promise a long cellar life. According to international tasting notes, the wine already possesses a seductive charm but will continue to develop between 2027 and 2042.

the style and preservation potential

Opus One 2022 is a wine of great complexity and balance. The combination of juicy fruit aromas, spicy notes, and a long, elegant structure makes this a wine that is excellent to drink young, but will only reveal more layers with age. Its aging potential extends over decades, with the wine continuing to refine and deepen. For the patient connoisseur, this is an investment in a wine experience that gains richness with each passing year.

In the early 1990s, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the world-renowned Château Mouton Rothschild, made a trip to Napa Valley. Impressed by the potential for winemaking in this Californian region, he asked local experts who he should meet. Without hesitation, Robert Mondavi was recommended, a pioneer in the American wine industry.

Robert Mondavi: the pioneer behind Opus One

Robert Mondavi, who started his own winery in Napa Valley in 1966 after leaving his family business, was known for his passion and drive for wine. His dream was to put Napa Valley on the map as a top wine region. When he met Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it sparked a unique opportunity to launch an extraordinary wine project: the birth of Opus One.

The fusion of Bordeaux and Napa Valley wine styles

In 1976, Mondavi and the baron met to discuss the details of their collaboration. This partnership resulted in the creation of a wine that combined the elegance of Bordeaux with the power of Napa Valley. The first wine, simply called “Opus,” was made in 1979 using a blend of Mondavi’s finest wines. In 1980, the joint venture was officially announced to the world, and the name “Opus One” was born.

The first successful auction of Opus One

Opus One quickly established itself as the first American ultra-premium wine. This was evident during a Napa Valley auction, where a case of Opus One fetched an impressive $24,000—at the time, the highest price ever paid for a Californian wine.

Opus One: a world-class vineyard

In 1991, Opus One's own winery was built, surrounded by 69 hectares of vineyards where varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec are cultivated. Every year, Opus One attracts around 60,000 visitors, who can visit the winery by appointment only.

Opus One is now recognized as one of the most iconic wines in the world. The collaboration between Mondavi and Rothschild has produced a wine that embodies both the elegance of Bordeaux and the rich flavors of Napa Valley. Opus One remains a benchmark for ultra-premium wines and is a must for any serious wine collector.
